Elsevier Senior Vice President Receives Prestigious CSA/Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award

New York, N.Y., March 6, 2006 – Karen Hunter has been named the 2006 recipient of the CSA/Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award (formerly the Bowker/Ulrich’s Award). This award for distinguished contributions to serials honors Ms. Hunter’s leadership in the collaborative development of electronic delivery of scholarly information.

“Karen is a true innovator and has worked hard to bridge gaps in the world of digital information,” said Y.S. Chi, Vice Chairman of Elsevier. “At Elsevier, Karen’s value to the industry has long been admired, so it is wonderful to see her receive the public recognition she deserves.”

Librarians and publishers alike agree that Ms. Hunter has pioneered a number of initiatives that have influenced the professional community as a whole. “Karen was selected as this year’s recipient because of her profound and positive influence within our industry,” stated Marilyn Geller, Chair, CSA/Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award. “She has spent her career pushing our industry to the next level by engaging both librarians and the publishing community.”

Ms. Hunter’s collaborative spirit has yielded important partnerships between the academic and professional world on a range of projects. Most recently, Ms. Hunter spearheaded the Elsevier partnership with Portico, a nonprofit electronic archiving service. Other notable achievements include her work on The University Licensing Program (TULIP), which involved nine major research universities, and her work with Yale University Library on the 2001 Andrew W. Mellon Grant, “Archiving Electronic Journals.”

“It is an honor to be acknowledged by my peers and colleagues. This award is definitely a highlight in my career,” said Karen Hunter.

About the CSA/Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award

Formerly known as the Bowker/Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award, it is presented by the ALCTS Serials Section. The award consists of a citation and $1,500 donated by CSA. The awards are given for distinguished contributions to serials librarianship, including such activities as leadership in serials-related activities through participation in professional associations and/or library education programs; contributions to the body of serials literature; conduct of research in the area of serials; development of tools or methods to enhance access to or management of serials; and other advances leading to a better understanding of the field of serials.
