Indoor air quality issues in schools across the West Coast have gotten increased attention as the school year has begun. According to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) bulletin (EPA 402-f-00-009), “Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can cause illness requiring absence from school, and can cause acute health symptoms that decrease performance while at school. In addition, recent data suggest that poor IAQ can reduce a person’s ability to perform specific mental tasks requiring concentration, calculation, or memory.”

The problem of IAQ contamination in schools is not a new phenomenon. Issues ranging from mold contamination, temperature and humidity issues to improper ventilation can affect schools. To help address these concerns in schools the EPA developed in 1995 and recently re-released the Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools (TfS) Program. The program has been implemented at hundreds of schools nationwide.

Many aging schools have seen their budgets decreased causing some maintenance projects to be postponed or delayed indefinitely. Common occurrences at many schools such as water infiltration, plumbing problems and HVAC failures can all lead to potential IAQ problems involving mold and other contaminants.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of mold and indoor air quality testing services, has also been busy helping school districts across the country learn more about air quality issues. “LA Testing provides free information about mold and other IAQ contaminants such as radon, asbestos, VOCs and even PCBs that can be found in many school buildings,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “A tremendous amount of resources are available to school districts, faculty and concerned parents to help them better understand the dangers associated with school IAQ problems,” Sublasky continued.
