Alcatel-Lucent’s “Open Community Broadband” program helps citynets facilitate FTTH projects

WEBWIRE

Paris – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that its turnkey “Open Community Broadband” program is helping operators of “citynets” around the world – i.e. open access networks typically operated by municipal governments or utilities - manage the complexities that are typical of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments. Alcatel-Lucent’s unmatched FTTH experience – and its wide ecosystem of partners – are the drivers behind a comprehensive program that helps managers of citynets determine the right fiber technology mix, design and deploy the network, and even operate or maintain it on their behalf.

Deploying a fiber infrastructure is a relatively sophisticated, large-scale project that needs to be done right the first time. Appointing a single, experienced interface to manage all the various aspects creates a unique value proposition, making it considerably easier for citynets to achieve their FTTH objectives.

Essentially, Alcatel-Lucent’s Open Community Broadband program helps address customers’ concerns in four ways:

* Training – including how to build a successful FTTH business case
* Technology consulting – which fiber technology makes sense in which circumstances
* Designing and deploying the network – leveraging passive optical networking (PON) or point-to-point (P2P) fiber
* Managing the network – dealing with all operational and maintenance aspects of running a multi-vendor fiber network, leveraging best-in-class capabilities in network management, deployment, maintenance and installation

“Most citynet operators do not have the necessary experience or workforce to deploy and run a fiber network,” says Dave Geary, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s wireline networks activities. “That is why Alcatel-Lucent offers them the possibility to engage in an end-to-end partnership, helping them to reap the benefits of FTTH – whether they are interested in PON or P2P fiber. Our customers know they can count on Alcatel-Lucent, with its lengthy track record in the FTTH space, to complete their project successfully.”

As a leading player in the OSS/BSS space with a growing list of open access network projects to its credit, Alcatel-Lucent leverages a unique combination of experience and expertise to address the challenge of designing, deploying and operating FTTH networks that can support a wide variety of operators and a vast array of services.

“Alcatel-Lucent’s Open Community Broadband program is really unique in the FTTH industry,” confirms Peter Lövgren, CEO of Netadmin, one of Alcatel-Lucent’s FTTH collaborators. “As part of this program, Alcatel-Lucent and Netadmin have created an operations competence center - resulting in a cost-optimized and standardized OSS/BSS solution for our customers. We are absolutely sure that this program will make it a lot easier for citynets to successfully pursue fiber-to-the-home opportunities.”

Alcatel-Lucent is currently involved in more than 95 FTTH projects worldwide, covering GPON and P2P fiber. Alcatel-Lucent’s Open Community Broadband program has multiple proof points already, including Singapore’s Nucleus Connect and OpenNet projects, German utilities Stadtwerke Sindelfingen/Boeblingen, Denmark’s Sydfyns Intranet and NRGi Fibernet, and Switzerland’s ewz. In Gartner’s latest FTTH Magic Quadrant assessment1, Alcatel-Lucent was positioned in the leaders’ quadrant for the fiber-to-the-home space.
