SAN MATEO, Calif.- Menlo Worldwide Logistics, the global logistics subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced that it has received its first Environmental Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWaySM Transport Partnership.

Menlo was honored by the EPA at an award presentation held today in conjunction with American Trucking Associations’ Annual Management Conference & Exhibit in Las Vegas. Menlo was one of 37 companies and organizations from among the more than 2,100 SmartWay partners to receive this distinction.

“EPA is pleased to recognize these SmartWay Partners with a 2009 Excellence Award. I commend Menlo Worldwide Logistics for its leadership in promoting sustainable transportation practices through the SmartWay Transport Partnership,” said Margo T. Oge, director of the office of transportation and air quality, EPA. “These actions demonstrate a commitment to a cleaner environment and more secure energy supply.”

The SmartWay Excellence Awards recognize partners that have demonstrated outstanding environmental performance by actively implementing and promoting sustainable practices. Key criteria for the award include shipping a high percentage of goods with SmartWay carriers, as well as increasing the visibility and effectiveness of the program through marketing and outreach to encourage other carriers to become SmartWay partners. Menlo was honored for its demonstrated commitment to not only choosing to collaborate with SmartWay carriers, but also for its extensive recruitment efforts to convince more carriers to join the program.

A member of the SmartWay Transport program since 2007, Menlo increased the amount of freight carried by SmartWay carriers by approximately 15 percent from 2007 to 2008. Other achievements include:

* An increase of more than 20 percent in the number of SmartWay carriers utilized as a result of the company’s recruitment efforts.
* Recruiting of more than 50 carriers to become SmartWay Partners since July 2008.
* Movement of more than 89 percent of customers’ freight by mileage on SmartWay carriers.

“Menlo Worldwide Logistics manages nearly $1 billion in transportation spend annually for our customers, utilizing hundreds of contract carriers. Emphasizing adherence to SmartWay Transport Partnership objectives in our operations and with our transportation service providers is a key element of our sustainability agenda,” said Robert L. Bianco Jr., president, Menlo Worldwide Logistics. “This is an excellent program for our industry and the environment and one where we have been able to drive significant results in just two years.”

SmartWay was introduced by the EPA and a select group of 15 shipping and business leaders in 2004 as an innovative, market-based partnership to reduce fuel use, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants from the freight sector. Today, more than 2,200 businesses and organizations have joined SmartWay, including companies of all sizes, from Fortune 500 companies to family-owned businesses, each working to improve their environmental performance.

Together, through the SmartWay Partnership, these companies, including Menlo Worldwide Logistics and its sister companies Con-way Freight and Con-way Truckload, will eliminate six million tons of carbon dioxide and save more than 540 million gallons of diesel fuel — a savings to the broader economy of at least $2 billion a year.
