Zero Touch Photonics approach enhances flexibility and efficiency for fixed and mobile broadband service delivery in Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia

Paris - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is further strengthening its partnership with Deutsche Telekom Group (DTAG) with the signature of new optical transport contracts with four affiliates located in Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. By enabling a seamless network transformation path, Alcatel-Lucent’s optical transport solution will enable the affiliates to cope with increased bandwidth requirements to efficiently deliver fixed and mobile broadband data services, including mobile Internet, video and multimedia, high-speed Internet and Triple Play.

The four contracts have been signed with:

* T-Mobile Austria — to upgrade the existing transport network connecting Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt and Graz to support 10GE and higher bandwidth per color. According to Christian Laqué, Senior Vice President Networks at T-Mobile Austria, “Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced optical technology will enable the smooth transformation of our existing transport network to support the fast growing demand of mobile broadband and set the stage to meet future NGMN capacity requirements.”
* T-Mobile Czech Republic— to enhance backhaul capacity and further improve service delivery efficiency. “With its innovative Zero Touch Photonics vision, Alcatel-Lucent is addressing our requirements for a new approach that multiplies network capacity both on-demand and cost-effectively,” stated Ondrej Cibula, Vice President Core Networks at T-Mobile Czech Republic. “This solution is significantly improving network performance, and bandwidth provisioning and is creating a future-proof environment for the introduction of innovative mobile services.”
* Slovak Telekom— to modernize the exisiting core network for service delivery and operational efficiency empowerment via automated provisioning. Ralf Mittag, Director of Production of Platforms and Technology at Slovak Telekom explained: “DWDM technology enables us to offer our customers bandwidth-on-demand both flexibly and with significant savings. With Alcatel-Lucent’s Zero Touch Photonics approach we can perfom capacity upgrades directly from the Network Operating Center, without physically exchanging any cards in the optical nodes.”
* PTC Poland— to continue its network transformation and leverage enhanced backhaul capacity for high-bandwidth mobile application in a multi-vendor network environment. “The Alcatel-Lucent optical solution offers us a seamless migration path to an Ethernet backhaul network, while contuining to capitalize on the cost and efficiencies of IP/Ethernet as bandwidth demand increases,” said Tomasz Gerszberg, Core & Transmission Department Director, PTC Poland. “With this deployment, we will be ready for the next generation of mobile broadband services at minimized cost per transported bit.”

Alcatel-Lucent will supply to Deutsche Telekom’s four affiliates with its 1626 Light Manager (LM). Meeting operators’ requirements for seamless bandwidth scaling, the platform provides a unique fully-tunable and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplex architecture and leverages Alcatel-Lucent’s unique Zero Touch Photonics approach to enable operators to design, plan and operate their networks with dramatically enhanced agility. This means that operators can remotely provision wavelength services within minutes from end-to-end, providing their customers optimal bandwidth virtually on demand.

“We are a long-time partner of Deutsche Telekom in the optical transport space in many countries”, said Alf Henryk Wulf, head of the Global Account Deutsche Telekom and head of Alcatel-Lucent business in Germany. “This is a significant achievement which shows the ability of addressing our customers´ needs end-to-end with a tailor-made approach. Our 1626 Light Manager provides many benefits through its scalability, flexibility and low total cost of ownership.”
