Alliance for Digital Equality, AT&T and Qualcomm Enable ‘Learning Without Walls’

Bringing 21st Century Wireless Education Technology Tools to North Clayton Middle School

COLLEGE PARK, Ga — Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies, products and services, announced today that it is working with the Alliance for Digital Equality (ADE), AT&T, HP, SMART Technologies and Saywire to provide wireless education technology tools to students at North Clayton Middle School, located in metropolitan Atlanta. The limited time pilot will outfit participating classes with HP notebooks loaded with education technology tools and embedded with Qualcomm’s Gobi™ technology for mobile Internet access over 3G networks. These wirelessly connected computers will provide students with access to tutoring, education materials and their learning communities, both within classrooms and everywhere they go after school. As part of this pilot project, resources for technical support, teacher training, project management, equipment and access to AT&T’s wireless network have been donated by the project participants. The pilot will examine how 24/7 access to educational resources through mobile devices helps improve student engagement and academic achievement.

According to the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and the International Society for Technology in Education, to compete successfully for tomorrow’s jobs, today’s students will need to learn to be leaders who can think creatively, work collaboratively and use technology to solve problems and take initiative. This pilot project is a part of ADE’s broader education initiative called Partners for Digital Equality Learning Without Walls™ and explores the potential of wireless education technologies in helping students to succeed in school and prepare them to be successful members in a 21st Century workforce. Access to the Internet provides students with enormous opportunities; wireless access anyplace, anytime extends the opportunities for 21st Century learning beyond the school day and the four walls of the classroom.

This pilot is a collaboration between the private and public sectors to focus on effective use of wireless education technologies in helping students increase their academic success in a school district that recently had its accreditation reinstated by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Each project participant looks forward to working with North Clayton Middle School to utilize wireless computing technology, training and supplemental curriculum in order to get students excited about learning and building skills that will make them more competitive in the future.
