Bringing 21st Century Wireless Education Technology Tools to North Clayton Middle School

COLLEGE PARK, Ga — Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies, products and services, announced today that it is working with the Alliance for Digital Equality (ADE), AT&T, HP, SMART Technologies and Saywire to provide wireless education technology tools to students at North Clayton Middle School, located in metropolitan Atlanta. The limited time pilot will outfit participating classes with HP notebooks loaded with education technology tools and embedded with Qualcomm’s Gobi™ technology for mobile Internet access over 3G networks. These wirelessly connected computers will provide students with access to tutoring, education materials and their learning communities, both within classrooms and everywhere they go after school. As part of this pilot project, resources for technical support, teacher training, project management, equipment and access to AT&T’s wireless network have been donated by the project participants. The pilot will examine how 24/7 access to educational resources through mobile devices helps improve student engagement and academic achievement.

“Qualcomm believes that access to wireless education technology and digital content are key factors to improving academic achievement,” said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm. “Just as business professionals now connect with their colleagues, business systems and documents through mobile technologies outside of the traditional 9-5 workday, students should have access to connect with their learning communities and education materials 24/7. We are proud to work with project participants such as AT&T, who is making its 3G network available to develop a pilot that will demonstrate the use and benefits of wireless broadband technology.”

According to the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and the International Society for Technology in Education, to compete successfully for tomorrow’s jobs, today’s students will need to learn to be leaders who can think creatively, work collaboratively and use technology to solve problems and take initiative. This pilot project is a part of ADE’s broader education initiative called Partners for Digital Equality Learning Without Walls™ and explores the potential of wireless education technologies in helping students to succeed in school and prepare them to be successful members in a 21st Century workforce. Access to the Internet provides students with enormous opportunities; wireless access anyplace, anytime extends the opportunities for 21st Century learning beyond the school day and the four walls of the classroom.

“This is a great opportunity to bring mobile broadband technology to the classroom,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “These students are the future. Investing in them may be the single most important thing we can do to help America remain the leader in the digital global economy.”

This pilot is a collaboration between the private and public sectors to focus on effective use of wireless education technologies in helping students increase their academic success in a school district that recently had its accreditation reinstated by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Each project participant looks forward to working with North Clayton Middle School to utilize wireless computing technology, training and supplemental curriculum in order to get students excited about learning and building skills that will make them more competitive in the future.

“Even if North Clayton Middle School was not in our backyard, ADE would still find a way to help turn this situation around,” said ADE chairman Julius H. Hollis. “These students will become working professionals in the years to come, so we’ve decided to invest in them today rather than wait to train them later in life. We are grateful to Qualcomm, AT&T, HP and the other project partners for helping us build a holistic education program for these deserving students enrolled in PDE Learning Without Walls.”

“North Clayton Middle School looks forward to the technological advancements that this project will afford our students, parents, teachers and school district,” said Clarence Jackson, principal of North Clayton Middle School. “This initiative will certainly give us opportunities to excel and tap into technology of the 21st Century. Our students and their parents will have a chance to benefit from the many services offered through the PDE Learning Without Walls project and I am thrilled at the opportunity to be a part of it.”
