Colorado Property Owners Should Test for Deadly Radon during Winter Months

EMSL Analytical recommends radon testing during cold months for the most accurate radon results.

Westmont, NJ, September 30th, 2009

Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural decay of uranium. It also happens to be a colorless, odorless and chemically inert gas that cannot be detected by human senses. Long-term exposure to radon can cause cancer according to the Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Lung Association and the National Academy of Sciences. The EPA even reports that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and is connected with up to 22,000 deaths each year.

Much of the state of Colorado is considered a Zone 1 area for high radon potential (probable indoor radon average greater than 4pCi/L). Zone 1 is considered the highest priority and was determined by the EPA and U.S. Geological Survey.

During the cold fall and winter months is an ideal time to have a home or property tested for radon. During these times buildings are typically sealed to keep the property heated and this closed environment can increase radon levels.

EMSL Analytical, a leader in providing radon testing laboratory services and products, has a website dedicated to radon which can be found at Property owners in Colorado and other states can check the radon levels in their geographical area and even download a radon map.

“Last year EMSL became one of a few select laboratories to hold radon certifications in all 50 states for analyzing samples,” reported Joe Frasca, Executive Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “EMSL also provides simple to use radon test kits for homeowners, home inspectors and radon professionals.”
