EMSL Analytical warns Georgia’s flooded building owners to be aware of potential Chinese drywall problems when restoring properties.

Westmont, NJ, September 24th, 2009

As residents of Georgia begin to rebuild after devastating floods this month a local environmental laboratory is encouraging area residents to be cautious of using Chinese drywall when rebuilding their homes and businesses. Earlier this year there were frequent media reports of imported Chinese drywall causing unpleasant odors and damage to building materials across the country.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s premier environmental and materials testing laboratories was inundated with testing samples of the suspicious drywall. In light of what has been learned about the problems with the Chinese drywall the laboratory encourages area residents to steer clear of the suspect product due to what has been discovered.

The problem with the Chinese drywall from earlier this year appears to be related to the presence of iron disulfide (FeS2 pyrite). Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbonyl sulfide, sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon disulfide (CS2) are also suspected as culprits. In response EMSL Analytical developed a procedure that can accurately compare certain sulfur gasses contained in suspect drywall samples versus control samples.

For area residents beginning to rebuild and remediate their properties they should also be aware of environmental concerns ranging from mold growth, sewage contamination and chemical contaminants from the flood waters. To ensure a safe environment many of these flooded properties will need environmental testing to determine if mold, bacteria, viruses and chemical contaminants are now present in these properties.

“Our Atlanta laboratory, and all of our other laboratories across the country, is ready to help area residents,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “We have positioned the expertise and necessary equipment to process the large volume of samples we are already beginning to see,” he continued.

EMSL has been offering testing services following natural and manmade disasters since its inception in 1981. For more information on testing services and products provided by EMSL please call (800) 220-3675, visit www.emsl.com or email info@emsl.com.
