New feature can shorten restart time as much as 75 percent

MILWAUKEE, WI. – Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), the global multi-industrial leader in energy efficiency, has introduced the Quick Start feature for its YORK® centrifugal chillers equipped with OptiSpeed™ variable-speed drive. Designed to reduce time for chiller restart after power failure – by as much as 75 percent – the feature rapidly re-establishes chilled-water temperature, keeps process equipment cooled, and reduces the risk of expensive downtime.

The Quick Start feature can be essential for data centers and process applications, where the goal is to protect temperature-sensitive equipment and processes by re-establishing process cooling as quickly as possible after a power failure. Quickly restarting a chiller can avoid the catastrophic consequences of data loss, equipment damage from overheating, and operational downtime.

The Quick Start feature can restart the chiller in as little as 25 seconds once power is restored, compared to more than three and a half minutes for a standard 500-ton chiller. The option is available in two configurations – stand-alone or connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

Utilizing a UPS offers the fastest restart because the UPS keeps the control circuits energized and the oil heater operative until the emergency generator is activated, eliminating the need for a control-panel reboot.

In both cases, the Quick Start feature minimizes chiller restart time. It also reduces the time required to return to the specified leaving chilled-water temperature (LCHWT). Re-establishing LCHWT is a function of load, compressor size and specified temperatures. For a 500-ton chiller at low load without the Quick Start feature enabled, a chiller can re-establish LCHWT in about 10 minutes, while a chiller with the Quick Start feature takes approximately three minutes – 70% faster.

Available as an option for 250- to 3000-ton YORK centrifugal chillers, the Quick Start feature requires a YORK OptiSpeed drive. The variable speed drive, with its patented Adaptive Capacity Control, remembers optimum speeds for various operating conditions; resulting in reduced annual chiller energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 30 percent.
