ONI Communications and Alcatel-Lucent inaugurate Portugal’s first intelligent control-plane based optical core network

WEBWIRE

Lisbon — Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext: Paris and NYSE: ALU), has completed the deployment of a control-plane based optical network for ONI Communications (ONI), a leading Portuguese communications operator. Offering higher levels of network security and availability to its business customers, ONI will be able to enhance the service quality of existing and new applications demanding increased flexibility, efficiency and reliability.

With the implementation of ASON*/GMPLS** technology, ONI is the first communications service provider in Portugal to use an intelligent control-plane based optical network to offer the highest service quality. ONI can thus negotiate differentiated service level agreements with its customers, providing simultaneously a higher quality of service at a higher value. In addition, ONI benefits from automatic traffic provisioning, superior network protection, operation and maintenance capabilities for minimized operational expenditures.

“With the increased use ofIP-based video and multimedia business applications, massive amounts of data must be handled by our network, thus we decided to implement an intelligent control-plane based optical network,” said Xavier Rodríguez-Martín, President and CEO of ONI. “We selected Alcatel-Lucent based on its advanced, field-proven technological solution and local implementation capabilities.”

“ONI decided to transform their optical core networks to manage the massive traffic increase occurring in their network,” said António Beato Teixeira, Head of Alcatel-Lucent’s business in Portugal. “Alcatel-Lucent assisted ONI by deploying a solution that also enables to maintain the highest standard of service availability.”

About the Alcatel-Lucent solution
Alcatel-Lucent deployed an optical network using an intelligent control plane. The intelligent control plane, based on Automatically Switched Optical Network/Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (ASON*/GMPLS**) technology, is key for dynamic networking and traffic protection. With more than 1,500 ASON/GMPLS-enabled nodes, Alcatel-Lucent has a field proven track for this technology, which is deployed in ONI core transport network through the Alcatel-Lucent 1678 Metro Core Connect (MCC).

*About ASON
An automatically switched optical network (ASON) is a network based on a technology enabling the automatic delivery of transport services. In an ASON each network node should be equipped with a Control Plane. The Control Plane sets up and releases connections and may restore a connection in case of a failure.

** About GMPLS
Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) extends MPLS to provide the control plane (signaling and routing) for devices that switch in different domains, including wavelength, and fiber. This common control plane promises to simplify network operation and management by automating end-to-end provisioning of connections, managing network resources, and providing the level of QoS that is expected in new, sophisticated applications.

About Oni Communications
Oni Communications is a provider of communication solutions focusing on the corporate and carrier’s carrier markets. In 2008, the company achieved positive net profit becoming one of the first new wireline telecommunications operator in Europe to break even in net income. In 2009, achieves net profit of 2 million Euros and revenues of 130 million Euros, from which more than two thirds are due to complex data services and integrated solutions. Oni Communications has a market share of 22% in the corporate and carrier’s carrier (C&C) segments, which positions it as the European new wireline telecommunications operator with the highest market share in these segments.

The company is owned by The Riverside Group (60.9%), Gestmin SGPS (34.6%) and other shareholders (4.5%) through WinReason.
