New Food Safety Website Announced by the White House

Food safety tips, along with recall and contamination information, are now available in one consolidated website.

Westmont, NJ, September 15th, 2009

At the Consumer Federation of America’s food policy conference, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a new government food safety website. Food-related safety information from a number of federal agencies will now be centrally located at www.foodsafety.gov.

The joint effort between the HHS, Food and Drug Administration and Department of Agriculture includes safe food handling tips and information about food recalls and contamination alerts. The website also has podcasts and videos that can be downloaded, a place to sign up for email recall alerts, as well as additional educational materials that cover a variety of food safety topics.

An important ‘Food Poisoning’ section discuses the causes of food poisoning and goes into detail about various parasites, bacteria, viruses, allergens, molds, toxins and other food contaminants. There is even an ‘Ask the Expert’ section that allows visitors to directly email any food or food poisoning related questions to staff at the FDA, USDA and CDC.
