Erionite is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral. Erionite exhibits similar properties to asbestos and according to some reports may be associated with lung diseases and deadly lung cancers, such as Mesothelioma. It is usually found in volcanic ash that has been altered by water and weather and its color varies from clear to white and its fibers appear glass-like.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not currently regulate erionite as one of the six asbestos fibers. However, according to the North Dakota Department of Health, “Like asbestos, erionite may pose health risks to those who breathe in the fibers. It appears to be associated with increased risks of fibrogenic lung disease, lung cancer and mesothelioma.” The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists erionite as a Group 1 Carcinogen.

Erionite can be naturally found in at least 12 western states. North Dakota has some of the highest levels and the mineral has even been used in some states as gravel for rural roads. Exposure to erionite primarily occurs during the mining and production of other zeolites when the mineral fibers are aerosolized and breathed.

In environments where employees may be exposed to zeolites and erionite it is important that proper respiratory personal protective equipment be used as this is the most common exposure route. Active monitoring programs are essential in industries using these minerals to minimize and prevent worker exposure.

EMSL Analytical, a leading environmental testing laboratory, has been analyzing mineral samples since its inception in 1981. “EMSL has an extensive history of providing testing services to ensure safe working environments around minerals such as asbestos and erionite,” reported Joe Frasca, Executive Vice President for EMSL Analytical. “Our state-of-the-art laboratories offer solutions to industries that need to monitor their environment,” Frasca continued.
