Civil War Veteran Major James Lide Coker Extolled as a Man of “God, Guts and Gallantry” in Book by Dr. Joslin

The author, Major Coker’s great grandson, felt a calling to search out – and share with the world – the history and legacy of his ancestor, a truly great yet humble man who rose from the ashes and ruins of the Civil War to serve his community and fellow man with vision and integrity.

“Today’s world is rife with corruption in politics, academia, sports, and business. We are screaming for strong leaders who are trustworthy. We need mentors, and Major Coker’s outstanding life mentors us today.” - Dr. Will Joslin

Major James Lide Coker served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. At the Battle of Lookout Mountain in Tennessee in 1863, he suffered a shattered left thigh. After he almost died as a POW in an unsanitary prison camp, he returned home to Hartsville, South Carolina, only to find it devastated by the troops of Union General William Sherman, who was known for his scorched earth policies.
However, he refused to let his destiny be dictated by the outcome of the war. Rather than sulk and lament the defeat of the South or his post-war bankruptcy, Coker set out to transform not his community and fellow man. With his extraordinary valor, business acumen, strong personal principles, and deep Christian faith, he led the economic, educational, and spiritual rebound of his region in a time of crisis and carpetbaggers.

Coker was few among many Southerners of his time – and ahead of the times in many ways. He was a pacesetter in women’s education and a progressive in race relations. Like fellow Confederate Army officer John S. Mosby, he disapproved of slavery. Through his businesses, he created employment opportunities for African Americans.

“God, Guts, and Gallantry” reveals how Coker lived an everyday life of “God, guts, and gallantry.” Fueled by his faith, he lived a life of service to his fellow men, regardless of their skin color, and embodied charity, humility, integrity, and resilience. Amid the challenges of the Reconstruction Era, he was fearless in effecting change and progress in a post-Civil War society. He dared to work toward racial reconciliation and lift the freedmen South economically through the development of his industries that hired them, and by means of his superior pedigreed seeds that enabled them to double their output of cotton, corn, and soybeans and break out of poverty.

It is the author’s hope that readers – Northerners, Southerners, and everyone else – will learn from the life and works of Coker and apply his dynamic spiritual, relational, and business principles in their lives. By reading and reflecting on Coker’s life, the readers will be empowered to lead satisfying, purposeful, overcoming lives and to uplift others along with themselves.
