Anyone who has struggled with depression knows how difficult it is. Barbara K. Mezera’s effort, From Despair to Hope and Healing,” shares her own experience with the complex mental condition.

The book contains over two decades’ worth of poems written by Mezera herself. Every poem shows a personal experience in her bout with depression. These pieces resulted from journaling while undergoing psychotherapy. Her journaling habit came about after realizing that her thoughts were better expressed through writing. At the encouragement of one of her therapists, she brought the journal to their sessions and read her sentiments aloud. Mezera gradually began healing through this.

Mezera’s verses have hints of darkness at times. However, she concludes most of them with a sense of optimism. Her poems are deeply personal; she had written them as universally as she possibly could to reach people who are going or have gone through similar experiences.
