Harvard Medical School Professor William G. Kaelin Jr., one of the 2019 Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine, plans on visiting UNIST on Thursday, November 5, 2019.

This visit is held on an invitation from Director Kyungjae Myung of IBS Center for Genomic Integrity (CGI) at UNIST. During this visit, Dr. William G. Kaelin Jr. will deliver a special lecture for UNIST students.

The lecture will cover recent Nobel Prize-awarded achievements, such as oxygen sensing and cancer cell metabolism, with particular focus on Tumor suppressor protein VHL. It will take place in Room 110 of Natural Sciences Building from 4:00 p.m. and will last for about an hour.

There will subsequently be a small seminar to carry out in-depth discussions into research paper topics with researchers who are affiliated to IBS. This will be followed by a brief meeting with Director Kyungjae Myung (Distinguished Professor, School of Life Sciences) and key researchers, in which they seek out opportunities for joint research and associated activity. The IBS Center for Genomic Integrity focuses on comprehending how these DNA repair processes are managed, which help cells recognize DNA damage and preserve genetic information.

Dr. William G. Kaelin Jr. is one of three doctors (Professor Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Professor Gregg L. Semenza) who won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine for joint research into how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. He currently serves as the Sidney Farber Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and senior physician in medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“This meeting with Nobel Prize Laureate, one of the best scholars in his field, is expected to help students materialize their vision as scientists, thus will serve as a stepping stone for further research,” says Director Myung.
