Fall Programs for Families, Kids, and Teens at the Guggenheim Museum

This fall, the Guggenheim Museum celebrates 60 years as an architectural icon. In recognition of this milestone, the museum is offering increased opportunities for visitors to enjoy the unique design of the building, which was recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with other examples of 20th-century architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright. In addition to programs that engage with exhibitions on view, including Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection, The Hugo Boss Prize 2018: Simone Leigh, Loophole of Retreat, and Basquiat’s “Defacement”: The Untold Story, visitors can enjoy architecture-focused tours, talks, and drawing programs that explore the landmark building in detail. FOR FAMILIES

Second Sunday Family Tours
Sundays, October 13, November 10, December 8, and January 12, 10:30 am–12 pm

Families with children ages 5 and up
On the second Sunday of every month, the Guggenheim offers family tours that incorporate conversation and creative, hands-on gallery activities while exploring the exhibitions on view. These museum educator–led tours are organized around a single theme and highlight artworks from the Guggenheim’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.

October 13: A Home for Art
The Guggenheim Museum opened 60 years ago as a space to house the art collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim. Explore artworks that seem at home here.

November 10: Color Full
Explore the different ways that artists use color in their work.

December 8: Surprises from the Collection
Spend time with works from the Guggenheim’s collection that have rarely been on view in the 60-year history of the building.

January 12: New Year, Who Dis?
Explore portraits in the Guggenheim’s collection.

Stroller Tours
Tuesdays, September 10, October 8, November 12, and December 10, 3–4 pm

Caregivers with children up to 24 months
Interactive, stroller-friendly tours of current exhibitions led by museum educators, featuring touchable objects, art-making, and great adult conversation

$25 per stroller, free for Family Members and Cool Culture families. Advance registration required, includes tour plus museum admission for one stroller (single strollers and front baby carriers only) and up to four adults. Little Guggs
Sundays, September 22, October 20, November 24, and January 26, 11 am–12 pm
Wednesdays, October 2, November 6, December 4, and January 8, 11 am–12 pm

Caregivers with children ages 2–4
This program is designed for little art lovers and their parents or guardians. In each session, children and their parent or guardian explore one or two works on view and then make a related art project in our studio. The hour includes a trip to the galleries, art-making activities, and more.

$30 per family, $15 members, free for Family Members and Cool Culture families. Includes admission, art materials, and snacks. Registration required at guggenheim.org/familyprograms.

Guggenheim 60th Anniversary Celebration
Monday, October 21, 10 am–5:30 pm

Celebrating 60 years of the landmark Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building, the Guggenheim offers live jazz and cupcakes in the rotunda, as well as commemorative tours and conversations throughout the museum. Visitors who share a birthday with the building on October 21 can present their ID at the Admissions desk for complimentary entry to the museum.

Guggenheim 60th Anniversary: Drawing the Guggenheim
Sunday, October 27, 10 am–4 pm

A transatlantic collaboration featuring the Guggenheim constellation of museums, this day of activities is centered on drawing the iconic architecture of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Participants share their sketches in real time with visitors in Venice and Bilbao using the hashtag #DrawingtheGuggenheim.

• Architecture Workshop: Guggenheim 360, 10 am–1 pm: This three-hour workshop explores the Guggenheim’s history through a presentation and an architecture-focused tour of the building. Following the tour, participants will have an opportunity to draw from various perspectives in the museum and reflect on their discoveries together. No prior drawing experience is required. All ages. $25 per person (includes materials). Registration required.
• Drop-in Sketching, 10 am–4 pm: Drawing prompts and materials for all visitors will be available throughout the museum for self-directed exploration. Free with museum admission.
• Family Architecture Tour, 10:30 am–12 pm: Explore the Guggenheim’s unique building on this family-friendly tour, which includes conversation and creative, hands-on gallery activities. For families with children ages five and up. $25 per family, $20 members (includes admission), free for Family Members. Registration required.
• Open Studio, 1–4 pm: Drop in and create architecture-focused projects in the Studio Art Lab. For families with children ages three and up. Free with museum admission.
• Art in the Round Public Tour, 2 pm: An architecture-focused iteration of the daily public tour, appropriate and informative for visitors of all ages. Free with museum admission.
• Film Screenings, 10:30 am and 12:15 pm: Enjoy a screening of the film Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum (2010, directed by Timothy Sakamoto, 85 min.), featuring architectural historian Neil Levine’s engaging personal commentary on the building and its history. Free with museum admission. Screenings take place in the New Media Theater.

Guggenheim for All: Art for Families with Children on the Autism Spectrum
Sunday, November 10, 11 am–1 pm

For families with children ages 6 and up
In this drop-in program designed for children on the autism spectrum and their families, explore works of art in sensory-friendly experiences in the galleries and create your own art in the studio.

Teaching Modern and Contemporary Asian Art
Saturday, January 11, 2020, 1–5 pm
Reception and exhibition viewing, 5–8 pm

This symposium brings together teachers, curators, and artists to explore how Teaching Modern and Contemporary Asian Art—a free resource recently launched by the museum—can be incorporated into the classroom for students of all ages. Featuring 27 artists from East and Southeast Asia, Teaching Modern and Contemporary Asian Art includes discussion questions, prompts for activities, and historical and contextual information, as well as high-resolution images, videos, and an audio pronunciation guide. Available in printed and digital formats, the resource considers how we might rethink Western frameworks and narratives to forge a more global art-historical approach, while serving as a visually compelling resource for the classroom. The afternoon includes artist talks followed by a reception and evening gallery hours to view the exhibition Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection. Attendees receive a complimentary copy of the new teaching resource. Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credit is available.

Sketching materials are available for loan at the Family Activity Kiosk to explore, by hand, Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural shapes and spaces.
