Dietary Supplements Recalled Due to Microbial Contamination Concerns

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information from an Arizona company that produces dietary supplements for humans. The firm announced it was voluntarily recalling four of its products meant to support immune health because of microbial contamination concerns.

The company initiated the recall of the dietary supplements due to potential contamination with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. This opportunistic pathogen is multidrug-resistant and can cause respiratory infections in people, especially those with a weakened or suppressed immune system. The potential for contamination was discovered after routine testing by the company had detected elevated aerobic plate counts in samples of the product. After completing additional testing, the firm determined that the products may be contaminated with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

The recalled products are oral sprays packaged in 5 ounce plastic bottles. The items were distributed nationwide via online sales and through some retail establishments in Arizona and California. They were also distributed in Switzerland. At the time of the recall notice, no illnesses had been reported to the company, but consumers are still being advised to stop using the products immediately and to return them for a refund.
