Law-enforcer-turned-author Pens Crime Thriller That Demonstrates the Many Ways Small Counties Fight Crime and Keep the Peace

“Greyhound Therapy” by Joseph R. Conway, could hypothetically, be considered as one of America’s best-kept secret that must remain a secret until such time when a condensed, across-the-states legal resolution is achieved. It is fiction rooted in facts, true-to-life encounters, and print media stories buried in the inside pages.

As the title suggests, the book explores the disaster-filled potential of people deemed risky and socially unacceptable when given a bus ticket away from one community, only to end up in another community- creating a vicious cycle that clogs the social, justice and local government systems.

There’s a saying: “when fiction came to life”, and we embrace the entertainment factor. However, another saying: “when the true facts of life slap you in the face” calls to mind when reading “Greyhound Therapy.”

The story revolves around the sheriff’s enduring commitment to his job, while tending a home life beset with tragic illness. The book starts off slow, drawing a picturesque view of the harsh winter. This lull is interrupted by petty thieves, who were decidedly thrown in jail, and started a trail of chaos.

Murder, death, government bureaucracy and human strife are woven into a story that attempts to shed light on the difficulties of budget strains on a county police force, of the limited resources offered from support agencies, even from the health system. The author is especially passionate about the “practice of moving undesirable or unwanted persons from one jurisdiction to another without regard for the impact on resources.”

“Greyhound Therapy” will be displayed in the upcoming Word on the Street, the biggest literary events in Canada this year on September 14 in Halifax, and on September 21 in Lethbridge, and lastly on September 22 in Toronto. About the Author 

Joseph “JR” Conway grew up on a farm in rural Maryland during the depression years. He was in the Army of the United States, became a law enforcement officer, and in some capacity became affiliated with supporting law enforcement efforts.
