Ukrainian-American author Sam Katchmar shares his story of the American Dream

Sam Katchmar self-published his autobiography “Sam’s Story: The Saga of an American Emigre-Immigrant” in 2011 to positive reviews on Amazon.
 
“This book tells my story and how I came to live the American Dream in the greatest country in the world,” said the author about his book. “I hope the story is inspiring and helps others see how great this nation is.”
 
The author, who currently resides in Northern California, was born in Forestville, Schuylkill County, PA in 1928 to Ukrainian immigrants. His father died in a coal mine accident in 1934 and his mother sold the family saloon and returned to Poland with her six children in 1936. The family survived by living off the land on their family farm.
 
World War II soon broke out and Poland was occupied by the Germans in 1939 and by the Soviets in 1944. The family endured greater poverty and their situation deteriorated dramatically when they were among the Ukrainian minority families to be forcibly resettled to formerly German territories in northwest Poland in the spring of 1947.
 
Since they were still U.S. citizens, the family petitioned the U.S. embassy in Poland in 1945 to return to the U.S. Their petition was granted in December 1947 and they returned to the land where they would later fulfill their American Dream. The next year, on his 20^th birthday, he joined the Air Force where he served for 20 years. After he retired, he worked as a computer operator for Napa Country, obtained a college degree to become an accountant, and married.
 
From enduring a Depression ear and war-torn impoverished childhood to living the American Dream, the author proves hard work and dedication, not entitlement, will bring one far in succeeding in the land of opportunity.

About the Author
 
Sam Katchmar was born in 1928 in Forestville, Pennsylvania, and is the eldest son of Ukrainian immigrants Paraska Holowata Katchmar and Stefan Katchmar of Wysoczany, Poland.  “Sam’s Story” is a memoir of his childhood growing up in the Lemko Region of Southeast Poland, in the midst of war and ethnic cleansing.  After finally leaving Poland in 1948, after his family was deported from their native lands, Sam enlisted in the United States Air Force, eventually rising to the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring.  Now in his early eighties, Sam set out to record the extraordinary story of his family’s experiences in the 1930s and 1940s.
 
Sam and his wife Lydia are living their American Dream in Northern California. “Sam’s Story” is his first book.
