Healthy Indoor Environments are a Crucial Component for Success at Schools and Universities in Puerto Rico

Zimmetry provides indoor environmental quality testing, monitoring and consulting services to identify and mitigate any issues to help create an ideal learning environment.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico – WEBWIRE

This is an important report that I encourage faculty, teachers, administrators, facility managers and parents to read as it synthesizes 30+ years of scientific research about the impact that indoor environmental quality has on our schools and students.

Most K-12 schools and universities across Puerto Rico opened their doors for the new school year last month. The return to classrooms is an exciting and rewarding time for students, teachers and faculty so long as they can focus their efforts on teaching and learning and not dealing with indoor environmental quality (IEQ) challenges.

IEQ is a key component for a healthy learning environment. Just last year, the Healthy Buildings Team at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health released a report addressing these concerns. Their findings, Schools for Health: Foundations for Student Success, was recently promoted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Indoor Environments Division to increase awareness of this critical topic as schools reopened.

“This is an important report that I encourage faculty, teachers, administrators, facility managers and parents to read as it synthesizes 30+ years of scientific research about the impact that indoor environmental quality has on our schools and students,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “It also addresses the impact the indoor environment has on our teachers as research has shown that these professionals have the highest proportion of work-related asthma cases compared to other non-industrial occupational groups. Temperature, acoustics, ventilation rates, lighting, particulate matter, mold, dust mites, cockroach allergens, volatile organic compounds and pesticides can all impact the learning environment.”

In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, school and university administrators can turn to the building science professionals at Zimmetry Environmental. Their staff of industrial hygienists and indoor air quality (IAQ) experts are dedicated to identifying and resolving indoor environmental issues in schools and buildings. Zimmetry has even sponsored an educational video about IAQ issues in schools that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/8ktQGXR5xPA
