Flexible PSoC®-Based TrueTouch Solution Enables Multi-Touch Capability
In World’s First “Half-XGA” Liquid Crystal Display
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) today announced that the TrueTouch™ touchscreen solution from Cypress has been selected to implement the touchscreen for the new Softbank Mobile Corp. 931SH mobile phone. The new phone, manufactured by Sharp Communication Systems Group offers a touchscreen that delivers “half-XGA” (1024 x 480) resolution, offering a brilliant, easy-to-navigate display. It also offers multi-touch capability, allowing gestures such as tap, double-tap, pan, pinch, scroll, rotate and others.
The Softbank 931SH is a slider phone that offers a 3.8-inch screen that is brighter than other phone displays. It supports mobile applications such as receiving weather information and other updates on the standby screen. The new phone offers a multitude of other features, including a Wikipedia-like dictionary function.
Cypress’s TrueTouch family, based on the PSoC® programmable system-on-chip architecture, includes single-touch, multi-touch and “multi-touch all-point” offerings. The multi-touch all-point solution can track up to 10 simultaneous touches. This capability enables designers to create new usage models for products such as mobile handsets, portable media players (PMPs), GPS systems and other products. TrueTouch is the industry’s most flexible touchscreen solution, as the unique PSoC architecture allows designers to implement differentiated features and make last-minute design iterations without board changes. “The Softbank 931SH is a tremendous product, and a strong example of how the TrueTouch solution can add real value to touchscreen offerings,” said Norm Taffe, executive vice president of Cypress’s Consumer and Computation Division.“ ”We look forward to working with Sharp and other major manufacturers on the next generation of touchscreen products"
Because of the flexible and programmable TrueTouch architecture, customers can choose to work with a wide variety of touchscreen vendors and/or LCD module vendors to create their designs.
“We provided a complete touchscreen solution for Sharp,” said Michael Bollesen, vice president of Japan Sales for Cypress. “Our ability to deliver an integrated touchscreen solution lets customers such as Sharp use their design talents to create value-added features and functions.”
Touchscreens have become the user interface of choice for many applications. Touchscreen technology addresses the conflicting demands for smaller products with larger displays by eliminating traditional buttons without sacrificing screen size. They also enable users to manipulate new functions easily and intuitively by interacting directly with content on the screen.
Cypress’s TrueTouch devices support projected capacitive touchscreens, which offer numerous benefits over touchscreens based on resistive technology. These advantages include optical clarity, durability, reliability and cost-effective implementation of multi-touch features. The TrueTouch family is the industry’s broadest touchscreen offering, including single-touch, multi-touch gesture, and multi-touch all-point solutions.
Based on the flexible PSoC architecture, the TrueTouch solution enables designers to integrate additional functions such as driving LEDs, backlight control and I/O expansion. These functions, in conjunction with flexible communication options (I2C and SPI), allow for unparalleled system integration for touchscreen systems. Additional information about the TrueTouch solution is available at www.cypress.com/go/pr/TrueTouch.
