Epson Launches its New Device Controller LSI for High-Speed USB2.0 that is Ideally Suited for Mobile Terminals

- Industry’s Smallest Controller LSI Becomes Even Smaller -

Seiko Epson Corporation (“Epson”) has developed the S1R72V13, the newest product in its S1R72V Series of USB controller LSI that is compatible with High-Speed USB2.0, featuring a guaranteed operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. Utilizing its strengths in the area of low-power-consumption technology, Epson successfully developed a USB controller LSI that not only requires the smallest amount of electric power in the industry,*1 but by incorporating a BGA package measuring 4 mm x 4 mm, it is also the industry’s smallest.*2

Epson’s S1R72V Series, including the S1R72V17, which was developed earlier and has already been included in the product lineup, enables ultra-high-speed downloading of various multimedia data, such as music files, to mobile terminals. This Series is equipped with a 0.5 mm ball pitch BGA measuring 5 mm x 5 mm ideally suited for use in a mobile terminal where the area available for installation is extremely limited. Particularly well-received is Epson’s proprietary low-power mode, the CPU Cut Mode, which makes it possible for this device to consume only 3.9 µW during standby mode, achieving the industry’s lowest power consumption*1 and making an extremely important contribution to a vital aspect of mobile terminals; battery longevity.

Shipment of samples of the S1R72V13, the latest addition to the S1R72V Series, is scheduled to begin in September 2006. The S1R72V13, which incorporates the industry’s smallest*2 VFBGA (Very Fine Pitch Ball Grid Array), measures 4 mm x 4 mm with a 0.5 mm ball pitch. Not only is this new product more than 30% smaller than the S1R72V17, it has also achieved a 10% reduction in power requirements, consuming only 3.5 µW in standby mode and taking over the top spot from the S1R72V17 as the industry leader in low-power consumption.*1

The register and sequencer device functions of the S1R72V13 are completely compatible with those of the S1R72V17, which is already part of the lineup, at the hardware level (logic level). Moreover, the specifications for the S1R72V13 make it possible to utilize the software for the S1R72V17 almost as is. These similarities enable users of apparatus incorporating the S1R72V17 to easily switch over to the S1R72V13.

Because USB2.0 high-speed controller LSI products represent such a key segment for the company, Epson will continue to expand its lineup of these products. In particular, Epson is concentrating on USB2.0 high-speed controller LSI for mobile terminals, with development currently underway on a device controller that is compatible with UMTS/WCDMA.
