Millions of rap and hip hop fans have been waiting for Detox to arrive since 2005. New rumors and interviews with Dr. Dre suggest, it’s on its way.

It hasn’t been since the 1999 release of Dr. Dre’s ironically titled album 2001 (a sort of sequel to The Chronic original) that the famous rapper has cut his own album. While he has been ever-present in the industry, and contributed and collaborated with other artists in their albums, fans of Dr. Dre have been in a holding pattern awaiting the arrival his highly anticipated album Detox since 2005.

That wait may now finally be coming to an end. But what was it that has resparked Dre’s desire to complete the album and get it back into the works? Sources close to the artist suggest it has been his work with Eminem, among others, in the past few years that have gotten him back in the studio—but what about the album name, Detox? Is there something there to suggest that the longtime advocate and open marijuana smoker may be using detox products, or may have come to a realization that cleansing and becoming drug-free would get his creative gears turning again?

Dr. Dre himself suggested in a recent radio interview on Power 106FM that his life is different now. “I’m just really having fun with life and having fun with being creative and trying new and different things with myself, just trying to stay active.” So perhaps, it doesn’t mean there’s any less hustle in there, but it could mean a different lifestyle—one in which children and family and living clean take precedent over smoking weed and heralding the “gangster life” as was once Dre’s claim to fame.

While there’s no public word out on exactly how detoxified the rapper is, as Dre himself says, according to The London Evening Standard, he’s been in the industry for thirty years now. That’s no small feat, and as a rule, artists in this highly competitive industry can’t stay as competitive as Dr. Dre has while sitting on the sidelines without reprioritizing and staying well managed. Perhaps detox products were a part of that, perhaps they weren’t. Regardless, countless millions of fans will be overjoyed when Detox hits the shelves, not a moment too soon.
