Healthcare providers have been keeping a close eye on reports of a growing worldwide pandemic of tuberculosis (TB).  Special attention has been given to multi drug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) cases of the disease.

Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria typically attack the lungs, but it can attack any part of the body. If left untreated or not treated properly, the disease can be fatal.

The bacteria are spread through the air from person to person. The bacteria can become airborne when someone with the disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Anyone in close proximity may breathe in the bacteria and become infected themselves.

Healthcare professionals have been watching the spread of TB closely.  These professionals not only treat infected individuals, but also must be aware of infection control procedures to prevent the disease from spreading in healthcare settings.

EMSL Analytical provides testing services to identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis from environmental samples. “At EMSL we utilize Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR), which is a cutting edge molecular technology that analyzes for the bacteria’s genetic material, to quickly and accurately identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “With the emergence of drug resistant varieties of the illness growing this has become even more crucial. Information from these tests allows infection control professionals to quickly identify potential exposure routes and prevent the spread of the deadly disease.”
