EMSL Analytical offers testing services for Salmonella and other foodborne illnesses in our advanced microbiology laboratories.
According to Food Safety News, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported an infection of Salmonella Hadar that left 37 ill in 11 states. The affected states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Of the 37 victims, more than a third are children under the age of ten.
The infection was spread through contact with live chickens from Hatchery B in Idaho. The CDC suggests that mail-order hatcheries, agricultural feed stores, and others displaying or selling live chickens should provide owners and potential buyers with health-related information, such as the risk of acquiring Salmonella through contact.
To date, 8 have been hospitalized and there are no reported deaths. Most individuals infected with Salmonella develop fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after the infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people are able to recover without treatment. However, young children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems may develop more serve illnesses where hospitalization is required.
