“Nakaochi Scrape,” also known as frozen raw yellowfin tuna, was the cause of the salmonella outbreak that has left many ill. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella has infected 316 people in 26 states. As a result of this contamination, the raw yellowfin tuna has been recalled from the distributor of Moon Marine USA cooperation.

The outbreak began on January 28th, and the FDA has since investigated a Moon Fishery, a distributor in India, where they found numerous safety violations

In this outbreak, two strains of the pathogen are involved: Salmonella Bareilly and Salmonella Nchanga. Salmonella Bareilly caused the majority of the infections–304 of the 316 cases.

New York reported 48 cases of Salmonella Bareilly infections; Massachusetts 33 cases; Illinois and Maryland both with 27 cases; followed by New Jersey with 26 and Pennsylvania with 25; Virginia with 22; Wisconsin with 19; Georgia with 13;  North Carolina with 10; Connecticut with 9; Texas with 7; Rhode Island with 6; California, Louisiana, Missouri and Tennessee all with 4; Alabama and South Carolina with 3; the District of Columbia and Mississippi with 2; and Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, and Nebraska and Vermont with 1 each. Furthermore, New York reported six cases of S. Nchanga; Georgia and New Jersey had 2 each; and Virginia and Wisconsin 1 each.

Those who suffered from the Salmonella poisoning are between the ages of 1-86. 37 individuals were hospitalized.

Those infected with Salmonella often experience diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. Though many people recover several days after the infection, infants, the elderly, or those with impaired immune systems are more prone to have a severe illness.
