New results establish Unisys ES7000 Enterprise Server as most cost-effective platform in Microsoft database environment

BLUE BELL, Pa. – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that its Unisys ES7000 Model 7600R Enterprise Server has demonstrated record performance and reductions in cost of ownership among servers featuring more than four sockets in the widely recognized Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) TPC-E benchmark. The server also registered strong results in the TPC-H benchmark test.

These new results demonstrate that Unisys enterprise servers can deliver significant IT cost savings for customers who maintain large business information infrastructures.

The results were the first ever recorded for systems using the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, which is scheduled for release in the first half of 2010. They corroborate Unisys strong performance in proof-point tests the company recently conducted for the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 environment.

Record Setting OLTP Performance at Reduced Cost

The TPC-E benchmark test results show how Unisys ES7000 servers can benefit clients operating in business environments that require high transaction volumes.

In this test, the Unisys ES7000 Model 7600R server achieved a new record for transactions per second of 2,012.77 tpsE, bettering the previous record by 28 percent.

In the TPC-E benchmark, economic efficiency is shown as dollars per tpsE ($/tpsE) calculated by dividing the three-year cost of ownership (TCO) by tpsE. The ES700 Model 7600R server excelled in this measure as well, reporting a Price/tpsE of $958.23 – a reduction of nearly 19 percent over the price/performance delivered by the previous performance record holder.

The TPC-E benchmark is widely accepted as the premier gauge of online transaction processing (OLTP), measuring performance under conditions simulating pressures in demanding enterprise data centers.

“In today’s constrained economy, organizations face a dual challenge,” said Colin Lacey, vice president, Systems and Storage, Unisys. “They must make business decisions quickly based on rapid access to large volumes of data, and they need to know that the systems providing that information deliver the highest performance at the lowest cost. These latest TPC benchmark test results show that Unisys ES7000 Enterprise Servers can deliver actionable business intelligence more quickly and cost-effectively than competing solutions.”

Strong OLAP Price and Performance

Unisys latest results in the TPC-H benchmark indicate that the ES7000 servers are well suited for clients who rely on large-scale data warehousing. This test is the standard measure of system performance for online analytical processing (OLAP) tasks generally used for decision support and business intelligence.

The TPC-H benchmark test that was run on the Unisys server measures performance as composite queries per hour against a 3,000-gigabyte database (QphH@3,000GB), expressing economic efficiency as price/performance in dollars per QphH@3,000GB.

In this benchmark test, the ES7000 Model 7600R server turned in impressive results, achieving 102,778.2 QphH@3,000GB with a price/performance (Price/QphH) of $21.05.

“These new benchmarks clearly illustrate that the performance of SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 on Unisys servers can help customers significantly improve the efficiency of their data center operations,” said Dan Neault, general manager, Microsoft Services, Mission Critical & Cloud Strategy at Microsoft Corp. “Unisys has once again demonstrated leadership in supporting enterprise-class SQL Server database environments. We congratulate Unisys on these impressive results.”

Highest-Performance, Lowest-Cost Platform for Windows Server Environments

The configuration of Unisys ES7000 Model 7600R Enterprise Server used in the TPC-E and TPC-H benchmark tests included 16 Intel Xeon 6-core processors, one terabyte (TB) of memory and Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition operating environment.

This latest release of Windows Server allowed access to all 96 cores in the 16 processors of the ES7000 Model 7600R server, where previous releases had enabled only 64 to be used. This increased capability accounted for much of the significant gain in reported performance.
