Telkomsel selects Nokia Siemens Networks to provide coverage, quality and energy efficiency

Indonesian mobile operator Telkomsel has signed a new frame agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks to greatly expand its existing network coverage, boost capacity and improve performance. The Indonesian market holds tremendous potential for mobile voice and data services, with active subscribers making up less than half a population of 240 million.

The deal between Telkomsel and its long term network and services supplier Nokia Siemens Networks, covers the supply, deployment and integration of WCDMA/HSPA radio access networks (RAN) as well as 2G base station sub-system (BSS) and services solutions in the country. This includes the supply of Nokia Siemens Networks’ award winning, and world’s most energy efficient, Flexi base station*.

Sarwoto Atmosutarno, CEO Telkomsel, said, “The cooperation is Telkomsel’s effort to maintain our position as the service leader in a very competitive market. We are highly aware of the importance of network quality in the era where competition is a call for quality. Therefore, we continuously expand our networks as well as increase capacity, one of which is realized by strengthening our partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks.”

“This year, by collaborating with various network vendors, Telkomsel will deploy 4000 new base stations, with a total investment of USD1.5 billion, which is an effort to provide a level of communications comfort to herald the new era of quality-based services as promoted by the government.”

Arjun Trivedi, Head of Indonesia, Nokia Siemens Networks, said, “As Telkomsel’s long standing network vendor, we understand and share its vision of providing unequaled mobile services to a growing subscriber base. This contract strengthens our reputation as the leading mobile network technology and management company in Indonesia.”

The Telkomsel network continues to be monitored, managed, and optimized by the Nokia Siemens Networks multi-vendor, multi-technology network and service management solution, NetAct, which will be upgraded to better support Telkomsel in managing their customers’ service experience.
