Celebrate Homemade Bread Day by Sewing a Bread Basket Quilt Block
QuiltBlockLibrary.com offers free quilt block pattern and new video showing how to sew the Bread Basket Quilt Block.
Since November 17 is Homemade Bread Day, Penny Halgren, master quilt block maker, took the opportunity to demonstrate sewing a traditional patchwork quilt block in keeping with the theme.
The Bread Basket Quilt Block was designed in the 1930s and originally published in the Chicago Daily Tribune in a weekly column written by Nancy Cabot, Halgren notes.
A quilt block is a square that is divided into a grid of square patches. Each patch can be sub-divided into other shapes i.e., triangles or rectangles and then different fabric is placed in these sub-divisions to create the design.
The Bread Basket is a relatively simple 4 patch pattern that can be made using some shortcut techniques. Most of the time quilt block patterns are made by dividing the block into a grid with the same number of patches across as there are up and down.
Often there are ways to combine these patches, so the quilter is sewing fewer pieces, saving both time and fabric, while increasing the likelihood that the finished quilt block will be the size it is intended to be.
The Bread Basket quilt block can be pieced by combining several patches, thus saving the quilter valuable time and money, and possibly freeing them up to make a loaf or two of homemade bread!
QuiltBlockLibrary.com is a resource for hundreds of quilt block patterns. Each pattern comes in several different sizes. For example, most 4 patch quilt blocks are available with full size templates in 4, 8, 12, and 16 inch block patterns. Although a 4 inch quilt block is small, just imagine using it as a design for a coaster or fabric postcard.
Free quilt block patterns are available for the quilt blocks demonstrated in each video. You can watch the video archives by registering on the site.
