Toronto-Area Police Secure Data and Meet CPIC Regulations with Aladdin eToken
Durham Regional Police join thousands of fellow Canadian officers in deploying Aladdin eToken NG-FLASH to comply with nationwide regulations for database access
CHICAGO – Aladdin Knowledge Systems (NASDAQ: ALDN), an information security leader specializing in authentication, software DRM and content security, today announced that Durham Regional Police (DRP) in Ontario, Canada chose the Aladdin eToken two-factor authentication device to comply with Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) regulations. DRP’s deployment follows numerous other Canadian police forces that also chose Aladdin eToken.
Durham Regional Police (DRP) serves 600,000 citizens within the Durham Region in Ontario, east of Toronto. The police force was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers by Macleans in 2007 — the only police service on the list. The CPIC sets standards and identifies tools to assist Canadian police in combating crime, compiling information on crimes and criminals into one central database available to all Canadian law enforcement agencies. As of 2009, CPIC requires that anyone accessing or altering data within police force databases must use strong two-factor authentication to verify their identity. By next year, 80 percent of DRP’s employees will be required to use two-factor authentication to access sensitive information.
DRP chose Aladdin eToken for its combination of smartcard authentication and encrypted flash memory, allowing DRP to comply with CPIC regulations and providing the additional benefits of Single-Sign-On, the Aladdin Token Management System (TMS) and the ability to store multiple certificates on the token. The powerful grouping of technology allows officers to access multiple important systems using only one convenient, secure token.
“Aladdin helped us comply with critical CPIC regulations the mandatory April 1 deadline, and even provided us with extra features,” said Ken Bertrand, network security analyst at Durham Regional Police. “We needed something that is easy for officers to use, and that allows them to stay productive on the job. eToken NG-FLASH provides Single Sign on (SSO), which consolidates each user’s numerous passwords into one, and stores multiple certificates on the smartcard and sensitive data on the encrypted flash memory.”
“The Durham Regional Police are just one example of how Aladdin eToken enables organizations to comply with government and industry regulations, whether it’s CPIC, PCI-DSS, HIIPA or any one of the multitude of regulations requiring two-factor authentication to access sensitive information,” said Chen Arbel, vice president of strategic development at Aladdin Knowledge Systems.
“Canada is ahead of the game when it comes to government and law enforcement technological regulations, and the United States is very close to instituting the same strong authentication requirements for U.S. law enforcement officers. Aladdin is already providing these solutions nationwide for some early adopters.”
