New Microcontroller Drivers from Fujitsu Microelectronics and Elektrobit Deliver Maximum Efficiency for Automotive Software Development
AUTOSAR-Compatible Drivers Provide Code Reusability across Applications
Sunnyvale, California, July 2008 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc (FMA) today announced that Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited (FML), a leading developer of advanced microcontrollers for automotive applications, has joined Elektrobit of Finland to develop new MCU drivers for Fujitsu’s MB91460 series of 32-bit microcontrollers. The new drivers are compatible with AUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System Architecture) release 2.1, and will offer customers a high degree of code reusability and maximum efficiency for application designs.
Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited and Elektrobit jointly created two AUTOSAR-compatible drivers. The first driver is designed for the MB91F467DA dashboard controller, an MCU with a Controller Area Network (CAN) interface. The MB91F467DA is used in automotive instruments panels to drive meter needles and control odometers, trip meters, warning lights and other information displays. The other driver is for the MB91F465XA, a FlexRay® 2.1-compatible MCU for sophisticated controls that provide communication speeds up to 10Mbps with high reliability. The AUTOSAR 2.1 specification now encompasses the FlexRay vehicle networking applications, so customers using the Fujitsu Microelectronics MCUs and the new driver can take advantage of the benefits of FlexRay.
The new drivers will be exhibited as part of an automotive cockpit product demonstration at Automotive Technology (AT) International 2008, July 23 to July 25 at Makuhari Messe, near Tokyo, Japan.

By deploying AUTOSAR standards, application software can be reused on any microcontroller, enabling efficiencies and cost savings for users.” Incorporating the FlexRay networking standard into the AUTOSAR specification leverages these benefits for leading-edge application designs, he added.
Fujitsu Microelectronics became a premier member of AUTOSAR in 2005, and in 2007 established a strategic partnership with Finland’s Elektrobit, a leader in automotive embedded systems software and hardware solutions. The new drivers are part of Elektrobit’s EB tresos® family. Both companies will distribute the AUTOSAR-compatible drivers.
Fujitsu Microelectronics and Elektrobit plan to continue providing drivers compatible with upgrades to the AUTOSAR standards. AUTOSAR is a standards consortium for automotive electronics and software. Originally active in Europe with the publication of Release 2.1 of its specification at the end of 2006, AUTOSAR concluded Phase 1 of development plans and has now focused on Phase 2, in which safety features will become incorporated into the specification.
