Cost Effective Visuals for the Digital Signage Industry

i-conic images, a recently formed division of a London based company with offices in Paris, has studied the needs of DSN providers and has developed a package of products exclusively for the DS market. Up until now, a clash of cultures between video rights owners and DSN providers has meant that it has been difficult to source high class video footage at the right price.

Working in close collaboration with DSN providers, it has a financial solution which gives them total flexibility and clear visibility of their production costs, whilst ensuring that rights owners get a fair and accurate remuneration.

It charges a ‘use of rights’ fee per site per month per minute of footage used. This enables the DSN providers & operators to budget clearly & precisely what the content will cost them. The DSN operator creates a monthly statement detailing the sequences used, the timing, as well as the number of stores using the programme. This statement then forms the basis of a monthly invoice for the total amount.

The same company has introduced another innovation designed to reduce wastage, which is to supply the footage in pre-edited 20 second clips, ready to be slotted straight into a play-list. These clips can be programmed together to form blocks of several minutes, or inserted between advertising messages to enhance the value of the on-screen experience. Delivery is on digital file in the chosen format/codec by FTP.

The company represents several producers & rights owners and their images are hand-picked from a constantly growing bank of over 10 000 hours of high quality footage, covering all of the traditional stock footage topics.

Another innovative product available is a new series of ‘digital video art’ clips, which has been created with hotels & restaurants in mind. Imagine a Miro or a Kandinsky painting slowly morphing in front of your eyes as you sip a cool cocktail and you get the picture. There are currently over 20 sequences available, varying in length from 6 to 15 minutes, and the catalogue is being updated on a monthly basis. The artists can also create individual and exclusive works on a commission basis.

Positioning itself exclusively as an image supplier to the DS industry, the company can also supply monthly updates of the latest trailers for Video Games and DVD Film releases.

Though the rights issues involved in the use of Music Videos are relatively complex, the company has a long-standing involvement with the music industry, and can arrange to supply music video programming in Europe. The content & conditions vary from country to country and according to the usage required.
