The Boondocks’ Sophomore Episode Earns Double-Digit Growth over Record-Setting Adult Swim Premiere Last Week
November 15, 2005, Outperforming its record-setting premiere on Adult Swim last week, the second episode of The Boondocks (Sunday, Nov. 13, 11 p.m. ET/PT), entitled “The Trial of R. Kelly,” scored across-the-board double-digit delivery and ratings growth among its target young adult demos, making it the most-watched program of the week on Adult Swim among adults 18-24 and men 18-24, according to Nielsen Media Research. The provocative new show from comic artist and series creator Aaron McGruder ranked #12 on the list of ad-supported basic cable’s top 50 shows of the week among adults 18-34 and helped drive the late-night service to a 33-week winning streak for total day delivery of adults 18-24 and men 18-24. Adult Swim also ranked #1 in total day delivery of men 18-34 for 30 of the last 33 weeks, and #1 in total day delivery of adults 18-34 for 29 of the last 33 weeks.
Renowned for tackling topical issues within his creative work for The Boondocks, McGruder didn’t disappoint viewers with “The Trial of R. Kelly,” which pitted brothers Huey and Riley on opposing sides of the hot-button “underage peeing” issue when R&B star R. Kelly comes to town. In moving to the quiet and safety of “The Boondocks”-a.k.a. suburban Woodcrest-it’s Granddad’s hope that he can ignore his rambunctious grandkids and enjoy the fourth quarter of his life in peace. But Huey, a 10-year-old leftist revolutionary, and his 8-year-old misfit brother, Riley, don’t adapt to the new environment as well as expected.
