EPA Region 7 Outdoor Classroom to Help Science Students Test Stream and Celebrate Water Monitoring Month
A team of EPA scientists will join about 20 students from Corinth Elementary School in Prairie Village, Kan., to test the water quality and examine the aquatic life in Brush Creek through hands-on activities, commemorating Water Monitoring Month.
EPA will have instructional booths from 3:15 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Schliffke Park along Brush Creek in Prairie Village. (See directions below.)
EPA scientists will teach the students about the water chemistry of the stream as well as its biology, looking for certain animal species (such as fish and insects) that indicate stream health.
Students will also learn about the streamís physical environment and habitats, and how various land uses and urban runoff can affect a watershed and the stream into which it drains. These lessons will be folded into the studentsí normal curriculum.
Water Monitoring Month runs from September 18 to October 18. During this time, people of all ages throughout the world community have an opportunity to monitor the quality of their local watersheds and enter the results of their efforts into an international database.
October is Childrenís Health Month, when EPA brings awareness to childrenís health protection. EPA celebrates 10 years of protecting childrenís health this year. During October, EPA is working with a number of schools throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area to highlight the importance of water monitoring and give students the opportunity to collect measurements side by side with EPA scientists.
