EPA Administer To Recognize Southern New Jersey Citizen For Dedication To Volunteer Service

(New York, N.Y.) EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson will honor Bill Christman with the Presidentís Volunteer Service Award in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Monday, July 30. The award will be presented following the Administratorís tour of the Atlantic County Utilities Authorityís (ACUS) Wastewater Treatment Facility.

While volunteering to serve on three major environmental committees in Southern New Jersey, Christmanís volunteer work has brought about improvement in the areaís rivers and watersheds as well as better storm water management and flood controls.

ďToday we honor Bill Christman for answering President Bushís call to serve a cause greater than himself,Ē said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. ďDedicated volunteers like Bill are inspiring others to join them in delivering America a brighter, healthier future"

During his travels across the country, Administrator Johnson meets with individuals like Bill Christman who are answering the call to volunteer service, environmental education and pollution prevention.

Christman worked with the Great Egg Harbor Watershed Association to bring about a national designation to Great Egg Harbor River as a wild and scenic river by the National Park Service. He developed a comprehensive environmental management plan for the Great Egg River.

Christman serves as chairman of the Hamilton Township Environmental Commission, the Planning Board of Hamilton Township and the River Council of the Great Egg Harbor Watershed Association. He is a professional musician and owns a recording studio in Hamilton.

In his January 2002 State of the Union Address, President Bush called on all Americans to make a difference in their communities through volunteer service. He created USA Freedom Corps, an Office of the White House, to strengthen and expand volunteer service. Americans are responding to the Presidentís Call to Service. Go to or call 1-877-USA-CORPS to find an existing volunteer service opportunity in your area or to find more information about service programs, including national service programs such as the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Citizen Corps. USA Freedom Corps is also highlighting youth volunteer service. Visit for games and ideas to see how Americaís youth are making a difference.

The Presidentís Volunteer Service Award was created at the Presidentís direction by the Presidentís Council on Service and Civic Participation. The Award is available to youth ages 14 and under who have completed 50 or more hours of volunteer service; to individuals 15 and older who have completed 100 or more hours; and to families or groups who have completed 200 or more hours.
