Engineering Firm ENGlobal Turns to Verizon Business to Help Protect Core Data from Catastrophes

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, Houston-based ENGlobal Corp. (AMEX: ENG) turned to Verizon Business Premium Data Center Services. ENGlobal, a leading provider of global engineering and professional services in the petroleum and petrochemical industries, further strengthened its business continuity plans by recently adding Verizon Business Remote Backup and Restore capabilities to help protect its business data.

“As we approach another hurricane season, disasters like Hurricanes Katrina and Rita remind us that recovery processes are critical for today’s data-rich businesses,” said Nancy Gofus, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Verizon Business. “Verizon Business provides a world-class solution for protecting companywide data - quickly, easily and cost-effectively.”

With more than 18 offices across the United States and Canada, the majority of which are located along the Gulf Coast, ENGlobal dodged major disruptions from Hurricane Katrina, but did experience minimal down time from Hurricane Rita, which completely destroyed the company’s Beaumont, Texas, administrative office. This event prompted the company, in 2006, to move all its core data - along with maintenance and management - to a remote Verizon Business Premium Data Center in another U.S. location.

“Before Katrina, companies didn’t place enough value on their data, especially the cost of having to restart the business from scratch,” said Alex Schroeder, Manager of IT, ENGlobal. “You can never predict something like a hurricane - until it’s too late.”

ENGlobal continues to put a premium on business continuity plans and procedures. In addition to adding Verizon Business Remote Backup and Restore services, the company is also testing satellite Internet backup services from Verizon Business. This will help provide ENGlobal’s coastal locations with additional business continuity protection.

“Our disaster planning places specific dollar figures on the loss of business continuity,” Schroeder said. “As a technology-driven business, we take a close look at the impact of recovery on our day-to-day operations - things like information technology costs, lost worker productivity and lost customer projects. Verizon Business services provide us with cost-effective protection against business disruptions - from humans, nature or otherwise.”

Through Verizon Business services, ENGlobal’s core data is backed up daily at each remote location. Local backup gives the company the ability to reconnect quickly from local events, such as accidental fiber cuts. For added protection, data is again backed up at a Verizon Premium Data Center in the United States.

“As an added bonus, Verizon Business enables us to better serve our customers,” Schroeder said. “The outsourcing of these critical functions enables ENGlobal to control infrastructure and maintenance costs and apply more information technology focus on our most important offering - that being the delivery of quality engineering project documentation to our clients.”

Verizon Business Data Center Services provide companies such as ENGlobal with 24/7 availability to a flexible and robust infrastructure capable of handling variable usage levels. As a Remote Backup and Restore customer, ENGlobal gains immediate access to bandwidth- and storage-efficient technologies including user-initiated restores via a Web-based management tool, automated over-the-network restores and daily backups for remote locations.
