True Moves Toward IP NGN with 10 Gigabit Ethernet Technology from Cisco Systems

WEBWIRE

BANGKOK, Thailand - July 7, 2005 - True Corporation Plc, Thailand’s leading integrated telecommunications solutions provider, has expanded its Internet backbone capacity and availability, upgrading to a 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) network capacity, based on the deployment of equipment from Cisco Systems®. This network upgrade marks continued development by True towards an IP Next-Generation Network (IP NGN).

Utilizing Cisco’s 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology, a first in Thailand, the upgrade will enable True Internet, True’s subsidiary, to enhance the performance, availability and efficiencies of its network in preparation of increasing broadband demand.

True has activated multiple 10 Gigabit Ethernet links on its Internet backbone, which is designed to deliver high-quality broadband Internet services for business and home users across Thailand. The upgrade to 10 Gbps provides greater backbone bandwidth to help ensure that True continues to lead the industry in performance and reliability, guaranteeing a high level of service for Internet users. The upgrade also provides full service to its Internet backbone designed to offer continuous network availability.

At the heart of the network upgrade are Cisco® Catalyst® 6500 Supervisor Engine 720-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules. The modules are supported across all Cisco Catalyst 6500 chassis and interfaces to maximize existing network investments. They also feature several industry-firsts, allowing customers to simplify network management, enhance operational control, maximize network uptime, and enable hardware-accelerated services like Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and network address translation (NAT).

According to Mr. Thiti Nantapatsiri, Managing Director, Home/Consumer Solution & High Speed Access, True Corporation Plc, “Thailand’s telecommunications industry is developing rapidly in line with changes in the Thai economy and society as the country embraces new technological developments. True, as one of Thailand’s key players in this industry, is committed to ongoing improvements to its network in order to provide the latest and highest quality services to our customers in both the consumer and corporate segments. The market for broadband Internet services has, over recent years, experienced phenomenal growth and will continue to do so. From 2003 to 2004 the number of subscribers increased from just over 11,000 to approximately 165,000, representing a 13-fold increase. Currently, we have as many as 240,000 customers and a market share of over 80 percent. True is therefore constantly expanding and upgrading its network to accommodate the increased capacity while at the same time maintaining smooth and seamless services for customers.”

Mr. Noppadol Dej-Udom, Director & General Manager/ Main-line of True Corporation Plc. and Managing Director of True Internet Co., Ltd. said: “True’s network infrastructure is unique in that we are Thailand’s only fully integrated telecommunications service provider. Our extensive network comprises both wireline and wireless. Cisco is undeniably the leader in Internet networking technology and by implementing their technology to upgrade our existing network capacity, we are therefore assured that we will be investing in the very best system and providing optimum solutions for our clients. This current network expansion project with Cisco is one of many projects that True has in the pipeline to constantly develop its network to handle any increases and new technological developments.”

Said Mr. Asawin Kangvolkij, Managing Director, Cisco Systems Thailand Ltd.: “Cisco and True’s strong relationship in IP is typified by this significant networking development. The deployment of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet network follows careful planning, testing and joint development work by True Internet and Cisco. True Internet has shown its vision as leader in broadband internet provider and commitment to provide high speed internet to their customers.”

Mr. Asawin added that Cisco’s technology leadership was verified by industry analyst firm Dell’Oro Group’s latest Ethernet Switch report. The report named Cisco as the number one supplier of 10 Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2/3 switches, continuing a Cisco leadership trend in 10Gigabit Ethernet that began in 2001.
