On April 15, 2024, the Special Representative of Ukraine for the Middle East and Africa, Maksym Subkh, together with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Mozambique Liubov Abravitova conducted the opening ceremony of the Embassy of Ukraine to the Republic of Mozambique.

Representatives of the government, business, the public of Mozambique, the Ukrainian diaspora, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Maputo, and journalists witnessed the raising of the Ukrainian flag in Maputo, officially symbolizing the start of the new diplomatic mission.

“The Republic of Mozambique is an important partner of Ukraine on the African continent. That is why Ukraine’s decision to open an Embassy in Maputo is proof of our country’s determination to intensify bilateral cooperation. Ukraine is eager to open a new page in its relations with Mozambique, based on our common aspirations for peace, security, and prosperity,” said Maksym Subkh.

Liubov Abravitova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Mozambique, greeted the new chapter in the bilateral relations of both countries, marked by the opening of the new residential Embassy. She emphasized that “…We are not only opening the new Embassy, but opening a new perspective of cooperation, which will be beneficial for both of our countries. As well, H.E. reminded that Ukraine is remaining a reliable guarantor of world food security, despite the ongoing war.”

In his speech at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Justice for Constitutional and Religious Affairs of Mozambique, Filimau Soares, the Honorary guest of the ceremony, underlined that the opening of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission is an important milestone in the development of Mozambican-Ukrainian relations, which will give a new impetus to bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

For reference: On May 26, 2023, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister paid his first visit to Mozambique since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1993. Before the opening of the residential Embassy in Mozambique, the Ukrainian Embassy in the Republic of South Africa was in charge of the relations with the Republic of Mozambique.

In a meeting with Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Veronica Macamo, during his visit, Maksym Subkh detailed Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, including missile attacks on infrastructure, and Ukraine’s defense efforts.

The discussions also focused on preparations for the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland, where Mozambique was invited to participate. Subkh reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to being a reliable food security guarantor for Africa despite the conflict.

Additionally, Veronica Macamo received a letter from Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, inviting her to an official visit to Ukraine.
