Adobe FlashCast Propels NTT DoCoMo’s i-channel Past 10 Million Subscribers

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced that NTT DoCoMo’s i-channel news and information service, powered by Adobe® FlashCast® technology, has surpassed 10 Million subscribers in Japan. NTT DoCoMo hit this important milestone just 18 months after the launch. The rapidly expanding data service is delivered through 25 channels to almost 20 percent of all NTT DoCoMo customers.

Adobe FlashCast technology is a leading offline portal solution that effectively delivers rich data services to mobile devices through a new generation of mobile applications called channels. NTT DoCoMo’s i-channel service allows subscribers to automatically receive five basic channels, including news, entertainment, weather, horoscopes and sports. When channels are updated, subscribers are notified via live information banners on the home screen of their handsets. For an additional fee, subscribers have the option to add channels delivered by a wide range of third party content providers.

“With 10 million subscribers in less than two years, i-channel has surpassed our most optimistic projections,” said Takeshi Natsuno, senior vice president and managing director, Multimedia Services Department at NTT DoCoMo. “With Flash Lite and FlashCast, Adobe has dramatically impacted the mobile experience for our subscribers.”

“We are delighted to see the first Adobe FlashCast deployment, DoCoMo’s i-channel, experience such explosive growth,” said Gary Kovacs, vice president for product management and marketing, Mobile and Device Solutions at Adobe. “This further validates the demand for engaging mobile experiences and the business opportunities available in delivering them.”

By pressing the i-channel button on a compatible NTT DoCoMo handset, a list of channel choices instantaneously appears. The visually stimulating user interface makes it easy for users to select which content to view. The service has grown in popularity with not only younger subscribers, but across a wide range of demographics, including middle-aged and mature subscribers.

Flash Player compatible technology enables operators, OEMs, consumer handset manufacturers and content providers to offer customizable user interfaces, while delivering more consistent consumer experiences across devices, operating systems, processors and screen sizes. By leveraging the Flash ecosystem — which includes the Flash authoring tool, Flash Lite™ player runtime and an established community of more than one million designers and developers — Flash Player compatible technology can reduce deployment costs and deliver content and interfaces three to five times faster than competing solutions. Today more than 200 million Flash enabled mobile devices have shipped worldwide.
