California Residents Have Access to Air Testing Services to Identify Known Carcinogens

According to California Cancer Facts & Figures 2014, published by the American Cancer Society and the California Cancer Registry, scientists believe that more than 150,000 California residents were diagnosed with cancer last year and that more than 50,000 died from the disease.  

One of the major types of cancer contributing to these figures is lung cancer and the document reports that it accounts for more deaths than any other type of cancer.  While it has long been known that smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke can increase one’s chance of developing lung cancer, there are also other environmental factors that can also cause the disease.  

The second leading cause of lung cancer according to many public health advocates is radon, a naturally occurring gas that comes from rocks and dirt and can get trapped in houses and buildings.  People can also be exposed to substances and chemical compounds at work that could increase their chances of developing lung cancer.  There are many known workplace carcinogens that may be present in dusts or fumes, including, but by no means limited to asbestos, arsenic, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium. 

“Some of these substances may also be present in people’s homes and communities,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “For example, asbestos and radon can be found in numerous properties throughout California.
