The OTHER contribution of Marc Edmund Jones, Astrologer
The less-known story of how he created the Sabian Assembly.
Human consciousness is so difficult to grasp that people for a very long time hesitated even to use the word.
Human consciousness is so difficult to grasp that people for a very long time hesitated even to use the word. Scientists have limited themselves to the study of visible behaviors. Only in recent decades have we seen a systematic effort to study consciousness like any other aspect of human experience. However, in 1923, Marc Jones inaugurated his experimental workshop dedicated to the expansion of consciousness. He called it the Sabian Assembly, placing it as an extension of an ancient tradition in Mesopotamia.
The story of how this came about is told by Stan Carnarius in his new book, “Marc Edmund Jones: A Biography.”
The concept is that individuals enlarge their own consciousness, using group work, such as healing, with the help of regular lessons and a program of personal self-discipline. Progress has not depended on interaction with Marc Jones himself, who never intended to function as a guru. The development of the Sabian lessons and other materials went on for many years, as the group slowly added membership.
At the same time, Marc Jones was revolutionizing the practice of astrology, which had deteriorated from its early science of astronomy into an entertaining form of fortune-telling. Starting in 1941, he developed eleven major textbooks which broke new ground and eventually lifted astrology to its place as legitimate counseling. Each book was a major contribution, as he traveled back and forth across the country lecturing and counseling until his last textbook was finished in 1979. In his press coverage, he was often referred to as the Dean of American astrologers.
This biography traces Marc Jones from his early days in New York City, where he formed important esoteric connections, through his career as a longtime freelance writer, as he also served as a Presbyterian minister and continued his own education, culminating in a PhD from Columbia University. A complete transcript of one of his astrology talks is included in this biography.
“In effect, this is the story of an intensive, long-term effort to provide modern tools to assist in the more rapid evolution of conscious mastery of the individual’s inner life -- to equip mankind with tools appropriate to the challenges of this rapidly changing modern era,” according to the author.

In addition to this biography, which deals with the development of the system, Carnarius has also written a book about his own exploration and discovery in this system entitled, “Adventures of a Sabian Student,” which began with his return as a young man from World War II.
Both of Carnarius’s books were previously displayed during the BookExpo America 2015 last May 27-29, 2015. And now, they are both available at www.amazon.com, www.buybooksontheweb.com and other leading online book retailers.
