Nutrition expert and mother Sarah Kottmann said mother tended to become stressed when their kids didn’t eat the nutritious meal provided especially at dinner time and reverted to giving them fast food or junk.

“ Its extremely important not to give up on providing nutritious food, it’s a phase that will pass” said Ms Kottmann.

“ Find ways that provide your child with nutritious food that they will eat in a fun and new way” she said.

“While children go through each phase, provide them with alternative nutritious option.”

“Dinner time should always be a smaller meal so don’t panic if your child eats less.”

Ms Kottmann said mothers with fussy kids could benefit from doing the following:

Use Compartment plates or small bowls: Small children love eating from compartments as it makes the food more appetising to them.

Provide alternative nutritious options: This includes a nutritious milk shake or drink containing a natural protein, vitamin, mineral and super foods.

Cooking with your kids: Older children can help you cook, which give them pride in eating the meal.

Separating the food: Some younger children don’t like food mixed with many different food groups in one meal e.g stir fry, casseroles. Separate the vegetables for example into each compartment.

Raw with cooked: Some kids prefer raw vegetable like carrot over cooked so give them options.

Ms Kottmann said "these easy option could give you a stress free nutritious eating plan for your fussy eater without the hassle of making a second meal.”

“It’s very important not to give up the first time your child refuses a healthy food option.”

“Just because they don’t like it once does not mean they will never like it.”

“Equally I hear from frustrated parents who say their children loved carrot one week and then absolutely refuse them the next”
“I understand it can test your patience, but the more often you dish up nutritious food the more likely kids are to eat it.”
