Selling and buying online is where South African businesses are moving.

South Africa is following online shopping markets such as the US, where an estimated 50 percent of shopping will be via the internet. Mastercard study in 2014 revealed that last year South Africans spent R3.3 billion on the internet and were expected to spend up to R4.6 bn on online shopping by the end of 2014.mIn a study by Google and published by World Wide Worx in 2012, the research firm found that online shopping was growing at about 30 percent a year in South Africa. Michael Bagraim, a labour lawyer in Cape Town, said his clients had forecast that up to 50 percent of shopping would be done online by the end of 2015. Consider Africa Internet Accelerator (AIA) for example, an internet startup accelerator firm in which media conglomerate Naspers holds a majority stake through its subsidiary MIH Internet Africa.

Whereas a retailer such as Pick n Pay or the Foschini Group employed thousands of people, AIA has 200 employees who work across three online retail sites Style36, 5Rooms and kinderelo. Style36, a clothing retailer and 5Rooms, a lighting, furniture and homeware store, netted nearly R4 million in combined sales on a single day and the customer base increased by more than 60 percent in 24 hours. Shoppers received discounts of up to 80 percent on international brands during that period.

E-commerce is set to grow on the continent of Africa. Africa is seen as a growing market when it comes to internet usage. According to the World Bank Africa Development Indicator 2012-13 report, of the 89-million recorded internet users in sub-Saharan Africa, half were in Nigeria.

Nick Maritz an web developer of webs.co.za an e commerce web-design company said: “ Its an misconception that only big business can trade online, we have small to one man businesses that sell goods online. In fact they supply niche goods that big retail businesses don’t stock.” Online E commerce can enable everyone to make money online. Most people think e commerce isn’t for them. Most people don’t know “how to sell online”. Its far easier and cost effective to have and manage your own e commerce store.
