The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that in 2010 more than 22,000 confirmed cases and 7,500 probable cases of Lyme disease were reported to the agency.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart and the nervous system.

Although Lyme disease is perhaps the most well known tickborne disease, there are numerous other illnesses related to ticks. Babesiosis is caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells and are spread by certain ticks. Anaplasmosis is a tickborne disease caused by the bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum

Other diseases include:

  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Rickettsiosis
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) & Other Spotted Fevers
  • Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness (STARI)
  • Tickborne Relapsing Fever (TBRF)
  • Tularemia

“With warm temperatures across the United States, ticks are active right now,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Only infected ticks carry pathogens that can cause disease. Testing for infected ticks can help identify areas of concern or if someone has already been bitten by a tick, it can be tested for pathogens. EMSL provides pathogen testing of ticks utilizing Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR). To help educate people about tickborne pathogens, EMSL recently launched www.TickTestingLab.com to provide information and testing services for concerned individuals.”

EMSL has also released an online video about tickborne diseases and pathogens that can be seen at:
