American Society of Plastic Surgeons Study Shows 98% of Women are Satisfied with their Procedure

Almost 100 percent of women who undergo breast augmentation surgery are happy with the results, according to a study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  A survey of 225 women showed expectations were met or exceeded in 98 percent of cases, and also reported many cases of improved self-esteem and quality of life.

Surgeon Dr. Tom Pousti, a San Diego and La Jolla Plastic Surgeon with Pousti Plastic Surgery said, “This study is valuable in providing information about the benefits of breast augmentation… Patient satisfaction is the most important measure of surgical success.”

Women with an average age of 34 were interviewed at least once a month for the five years following surgery. On a 10 point scale, the women reported an average pain score during recovery of 5.9, used prescription pain medication for five days and were off work seven days.  Patients felt they were ‘back to normal’ around 25 days after surgery.

The survey found 85 percent of women rated their new breast size as “just right” while 13 per cent would have preferred a larger size. Only one per cent expressed dissatisfaction with their scars, which were usually located in the crease under the breast.

Nearly 40 per cent of women surveyed experienced at least temporary nipple numbness after surgery and persistent numbness was reported by only two percent. Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States. Approximately 286,000 operations were performed in 2012, according to ASPS statistics.
