Last month, the Ventura County Star reported about concerns from parents and faculty at Fillmore Middle School. According to the report, the 12 year old school in Fillmore, California, has been plagued with roof leaks that in recent years have gotten much worse and now mold has been discovered growing in the school.
“There were leaks in the past, but they were not as significant as this year. This year has been the tipping point,” said Earl Davis, interim assistant superintendent for the Fillmore Unified School District. "This has gone from being a maintenance issue with occasional roof leaks to what could potentially become a health and safety issue.”
Airborne mold can cause a variety of health concerns for teachers and students. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Poor indoor air quality can impact the comfort and health of students and staff, which, in turn, can affect concentration, attendance, and student performance. In addition, if schools fail to respond promptly to poor IAQ, students and staff are at an increased risk of short-term health problems, such as fatigue and nausea, as well as long-term problems like asthma.”
“It’s important that students who spend 8 hours a day in classrooms have good indoor air quality,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing, a leading mold and IAQ testing laboratory. “Poor IAQ can not only diminish a student’s capacity to learn, but it can also increase absenteeism and lead to allergies, asthma and even fungal infections in susceptible individuals.”
To help educate students, faculty and parents about IAQ issues and student performance, LA Testing has sponsored an online video on the topic:
