Media Accreditation Opens for World Economic Forum in Myanmar

Geneva, Switzerland - After a series of bold economic and political reforms, Myanmar has chosen to host the 22nd World Economic Forum on East Asia where the first leading international gathering of senior decision-makers from industry, government, academia and civil society will be held. The meeting will take place in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar from 5 to 7 June.

Media accreditation for the meeting is now open. If you would like to cover this event, please register online at www.weforummedia.org by Friday 10 May. As the number of accreditations issued is strictly limited, we will not be able to accommodate late registrations. No accreditation will be granted on site.

The meeting, through this multistakeholder platform, will be an unrivalled opportunity to understand and to shape Myanmar’s ongoing reforms and reconciliation process. Additionally, as Myanmar assumes the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2014, it will have a critical role in guiding the bloc’s 10-member economies toward the planned economic integration in 2015. In this regard, the meeting will provide value not only to participants from the ASEAN region but also to those who see in ASEAN an important evolving geopolitical and geo-economic pillar of the global economy.

Under the main theme “Courageous Transformation for Inclusion and Integration”, this year’s meeting will discuss the following sub-themes:

• Inspiring Inclusive Transformation
• Realizing Regional Integration
• Regional Solutions for Global Resilience

The Co-Chairs of the World Economic Forum on East Asia are: Helen E. Clark, Administrator, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), New York; Anthony F. Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia, Malaysia; Yorihiko Kojima, Chairman of the Board, Mitsubishi Corporation, Japan; Indra Nooyi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, PepsiCo, USA; Subramanian Ramadorai, Vice-Chairman, Tata Consultancy Services, India; and John Rice, Vice-Chairman, GE, Hong Kong SAR.

In conjunction with the East Asia meeting, the World Economic Forum will be hosting its Young Global Leaders Annual Summit in Yangon from 2 to 7 June. More than 200 Young Global Leaders (YGLs), representing business, government, civil society, arts and culture, academia and media, as well as social entrepreneurs, will take part in the Summit. The focus will be on progressing civil society institutions, long-term sustainable economic development and engaging with younger generations. The YGL programme includes meetings with Myanmar government representatives, the business community and civil society; first-hand experience of working with, and learning from, local organizations and communities; and workshops and cross-mentorship initiatives.
