The Institute for Safety and Health Management recently introduced the Certified Safety Management Practitioner certification program.

Earlier this month, the Institute for Safety and Health Management (ISHM) unveiled the new Certified Safety Management Practitioner (CSMP) program to the safety professional community.  The CSMP was developed to provide a path to certification for many in the profession who were previously underserved.

The CSMP was specifically created to recognize people performing occupational safety and health management activities either on a part-time or full-time basis, but may have taken a less formal path in their health and safety education. The CSMP program provides formal recognition for these professionals.

The CSMP is the latest designation offered by the ISHM.  In addition to the CSMP program, the ISHM also administers the Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) certification and Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM) program.  “The ISHM’s Board of Directors felt that an entire group of practicing safety professionals who had a less formal education in the field deserved a path to recognition,” reported Larry Curtis, CSHM, Executive Director of ISHM.  “The CSMP program fills that void.  As an additional incentive, the CSMP is being grandfathered for the remainder of 2013 so that applicants who meet the requirements do not have to pass an examination.”

CSMP Program requirements include:

  • Minimum educational requirement is High School Diploma or GED.
  • Work experience requirement in occupational safety and health:
    • 5 years experience of full time professional safety and health management experience acceptable to the Institute for Safety and Health Management (ISHM).
    • Full time professional safety and health management experience requires position duties with 50% or greater safety and health management related activities.
  • Two years of part time experience 25% or greater safety and health management related activities may be substituted for one full year.
