Iomega Sets New Standard for Small and Medium Business Data Protection by Doubling the Capacity of Its Award-Winning REV Technology
Second-Generation REV Drive Delivers 70 Gigabytes Per Removable Disk For Enterprise-Level Performance at Small Business Prices
SAN DIEGO, July 18, 2006 - Iomega Corporation (NYSE: IOM), a global leader in data protection, today announced the latest breakthrough in high-capacity removable storage for the backup and archive needs of small and medium-sized businesses: the new Iomega® REV® 70GB Backup Drive.
Now available worldwide in external USB 2.0 and internal ATAPI models, the new Iomega REV 70GB Backup Drive utilizes ruggedized, removable, 2.5 inch 70GB* REV disks that double the capacity of first-generation REV 35GB products, delivering the same proven reliability and unbeatable price-performance for small and medium-sized businesses. In support of its existing REV customers, Iomega REV 70GB Backup Drives offer backward read and write compatibility with first-generation REV 35GB disks.
“In little more than two years, Iomega’s REV product line has earned a reputation for performance, durability, dependability and ease-of-use compared to tape formats and other backup and archive data protection options for SMBs,” said Tom Kampfer, President and Chief Operating Officer, Iomega Corporation. "After selling more than 1.2 million REV 35GB disks and 225,000 drives, we are now taking our REV technology to the next level.
“The new REV 70 Backup Drive is a superior solution to the tape products that are often used in server solutions for backup and archive of critical data by SMBs,” continued Kampfer. “Compared to a DAT 72 format tape drive, we offer almost twice the native capacity (36GB vs. 70GB for REV), instantaneous random access to your files, faster backups and restores, ruggedized cartridges, and our drive costs $100 to $200 less. In true Iomega tradition, we have delivered a safer, smarter and better removable backup solution and the de facto alternative to tape backup products for small businesses.”
With the introduction of the REV 70 Backup Drive, Iomega’s REV platform now features two capacity points: REV 35GB drive and disks, ideal for desktop backup and archive needs; and REV 70GB drive and disks, delivering increased capacity for server backup applications. The REV product family also includes automation solutions like the REV Loader 280, which manages eight REV 35GB disks in an innovative desktop enclosure.
Iomega’s REV 70GB disks can store as much as 140GB of data with compression** using standard backup software. EMC® award-winning Retrospect® Express software ships with all desktop REV drives for automatic backup and disaster recovery; REV server solutions come with CA’s BrightStor® ArcServe® Backup software.
“The combination of Iomega’s next generation REV drive with EMC Retrospect software creates a solid automatic backup and archive solution that small and medium businesses can count on to protect their critical data,” said Don Chouinard, Director of SMB Products, EMC Corporation. “SMBs often have no internal IT resources, making it imperative that their backup and archive process be dependable as well as easy to implement and maintain. The total solution of the new REV drive and Retrospect software delivers against that critical need.”
The Evolution of Backup and Archive Technology
Reliable data backups are a necessity in all businesses. Yet the most common storage alternatives have limitations as backup devices. Optical drives have weaknesses of reliability, capacity, and speed. Hard drives are not an archive medium and compared to a REV disk, they have weaknesses of shock and vibration reliability and expandability. Tape drives, which are designed for backup, require regular head cleaning and have weaknesses of drive cost, speed, and reliability. The tapes themselves require periodic tape re-tensioning and careful storage.
Compared to these options, Iomega’s REV products are a uniquely simple and reliable backup technology. Designed to provide the performance of a hard drive with the removability of tape, the REV technology has garnered many industry awards as an ideal tape-replacement solution for SMBs because of its durability, rewritability, reliability, and excellent price-performance.
Graphic design firms are using REV disks as project disks to save and share their large files. Academic institutions are using REV disks to store and protect students’ multi-media files. Network professionals are using REV technology as a cost-effective, random access tape-replacement solution. Through Iomega’s Thomson Grass Valley alliance, REV drives are being used for professional video applications. Home “power users” utilize REV to back up their multimedia files.
Gerry Wisnoski, owner of Clearlight Information Systems, LTD, a Canada-based IT consultancy to large and small businesses in North America and Europe, had this to say about the new Iomega REV 70GB Backup Drive: “I’ve been using and recommending the REV 35GB Backup Drive to my clients for more than two years. Now that I’ve tested and used the REV 70GB Backup Drive, I’m an even greater proponent of Iomega’s REV technology. My clients absolutely need to know their backup and archive process is dependable and their data is secure. The REV technology provides that peace of mind. The fact that a single REV disk can now hold up to 70GB of uncompressed data and still be easy to implement and maintain makes REV technology my preferred backup and archive solution for all of my small business clients.”
Improved REV 70GB Performance
Iomega’s new REV 70GB Backup Drives feature improved transfer rates of 30 MB/sec. (max), versus 25 MB/sec for first-generation REV 35GB products. Both generations of REV products boast extensive third-party software support, estimated 30 year archival life, and an estimated one million rewrite durability - the kind of performance tape products such as DAT 72 can never match. And while tape products require frequent head cleaning and an expensive tape replacement regime, REV drives and disks are designed for continuous reliable use with zero maintenance.
These advantages translate into the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) of all major backup solutions. Savings include reduced labor, hardware costs, and system downtime. Higher capacity REV 70GB disks also reduce time spent changing media and provide greater consolidation of data.
REV 70GB Backup Drives come with a worldwide three-year warranty. REV 35GB Backup Drives are warranted for 1 year in the Americas and Asia-Pacific, 2 years in Europe.
All REV disks are warranted for 5 years.
