Logic PD Torpedo + Wireless SOM enables OEMs to design products easier and deliver them to market faster

SAN DIEGO– Dec. 11, 2012Logic PD’s DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless System on Module (SOM) has been awarded CONNECT’s 2012 Most Innovative New Product in the hardware and general technology category. OEMs employ the Logic PD Torpedo + Wireless SOM to more easily design their end products and deliver them to market faster with high performance, low power consumption and wireless capabilities built-in.

CONNECT is is a San Diego County-based organization that supports innovative technology and life sciences product development. More than 100 companies competed for the Most Innovative New Product awards.

“Doing more with less is the challenge many product designers and developers face today as devices continue to shrink in form factor to meet user expectations. This SOM enables them to do just that. Logic PD is giving the industry an incredible amount of cutting edge technology on a dime-sized board so they can do so much more with so much less – space, that is,” said Camille Saltman, president, CONNECT. “Ultimately, this innovative technology will enable life science-centric companies to develop their products with even greater technological advances and deliver them to market faster than ever before.”

Today in the medical, military/aerospace and industrial markets, clients demand the same user-friendly, compact mobile devices expected by smartphone consumers. These devices require condensed embedded technology that powers on quickly, has a long lasting battery and is always connected.  Logic PD’s SOM offers designers a tiny, off-the-shelf wireless interface that dramatically condenses hardware space requirements, increases system performance and enables remote connectivity.

Ten times smaller than the competition, Logic PD’s Torpedo + Wireless SOM can also provide “instant on” functionality. This supporting software is highly attractive to companies that develop life-critical battlefield and medical devices (e.g. reconnaissance robots and portable defibrillators) as it makes new technical developments possible. Customized to meet specific product requirements, this advancement enables Logic PD SOM customers to develop battery-powered devices that power on significantly faster than competing end user products, and give end users the ability to use their devices faster and for longer periods of time.

“We are grateful that our Torpedo + Wireless SOM is being recognized for all we envisioned for this product when we developed it,” said Jim Caraccio, vice president and general manager of Logic PD’s west coast operation. “Hundreds of innovative local area companies competed for the CONNECT awards, and it was truly inspiring to see so many like-minded organizations come together. We are incredibly proud of our team and our wireless SOM technology for the positive impact both are having across multiple industries.”

Based on the DaVinci DM3730 video processor and WiLinkTM 7.0 (WL1283) combo connectivity solution from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI), Logic PD’s Torpedo SOM provides PC-like speeds up to 1 GHz and a WL1283 wireless chipset that includes 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth® technology, and the Torpedo + Wireless SOM roadmap to support GPS. Additionally, the DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless SOM is FCC certified. This saves customers significant time and money by reducing design risk and shortening the final electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing phase.

Logic PD provides Android and Linux™ board support packages (BSPs) for use with the Torpedo + Wireless SOM.  These BSPs are designed, developed and tested using an ISO 13485 certified process to ensure quality and reduce risk. By maintaining connector compatibility with Logic PD’s existing Torpedo SOM product lines, the DM3730 SOM extends the longevity of existing products through performance improvements while sustaining scalability to future technologies.
